My wife and I had a Little League shoot on Saturday. As usual she was shooting the Digital Rebel with the Sigma 170-500 on a tripod and I was shooting the 20D with the Sigma 70-200 2.8 hand held. Half way into it she calls me on the walkie talkie and tells me she is getting frames where half of the picture is black. Knowing what I know about the Digital Rebel not being rated for high frame counts I had an idea that maybe our shutter was going out. I took the lens off and I noticed that a little "door" that is below the mirror was hanging down when the mirror was up. I think it is the AF sensor. I closed it up with my finger and now the images would show up properly but no AF. We went home heartbroken and were even more upset because we could not find the receipt. We finally decided that we needed another camera for a shoot that we were doing that night so we went to buy another one at the same place where we bought the DRebel (local place that has good prices). Once there we were surprised to see that they had the 20D in stock at a good price. Well we took the plunge and got another 20D. The salesman was also nice enough to research our account to find our invoice for the DRebel and low and behold we had bought an extended service plan on it. We sent it back for repairs and will sell it when it comes back in 2 to 4 weeks.

My wife shot her first event with the 20D and did very well. We now have 2 bodies that are more solidly built since we are putting a lot of shutter actuations through these babies.

Sorry for the long read but wanted to share our experience. We really liked our DRebel but it failed us and we are starting to make money off of this and can't afford problems.

OviV,

Approximately, how many shots have you put through your camera? Just curious.....

I guestimate that we were between 9K and 11K.

That little "door" is not the AF sensor itself but is the second mirror which deflects the light passing through the partially silvered section of the main mirror down to the AF sensor which is located in the base of the mirror box. It should have flipped up with the main mirror.
I don't imagine that it is a particularly expensive repair, probably just a replacement mirror assembly.

Im hopeing that my Digital Rebel shoots craps in the next few years and best buy lets me apply the original price tag to a 20D with my extend warranty.

Hang in there RJ. I know you'll have another one soon. Will you promise us to insure it, though?
