View Full Version : How do you carry your lenses?

If you carry your SLR camera in a shoulder bag or other type, how do you carry your lenses? Are they in their individual cases inside your camera bag? Do you just carry the lenses with the caps on in the bag using the provided padded dividers? Is dirt, dust and grime a problem if you do carry your lenses "loose" in your camera bag?

Never ever carry them "loose". Way too much potential to end up with dust bunnies. If I am doing a walk around the city or something similar I have a shoulder bag that I put them in. If I am cruising through a wildlife park or hanging out for birds I tend to just take what I need and put it in my Domke shooting vest.

So you carry your lenses in the small bags they came in and then you put those pouches inside a shoulder bag or shooting vest?

The only lens I have that ever sees its official case is the 100-400 (too big to play nicely with everything else when the lens hood's on, either end out). Everything else fits into compartments in my Domke Bag's 3 or 4 compartment inserts, and just lives there unless I move it to separate compartments in one of my other bags (Slinger, Quest Giraffe/Toad).

The cases/bags I have used have slots in them for lenses.. I put the lenses in those slots with both caps on.
You will find that most soft cases shipped with lenses never see the outside of the shipping box.

I just got myself a LowePro (http://www.lowepro.com) backpack, which i'll use for carrying things around. They have quite a few types - I got one with a padded camera compartment and a general compartment, which suits me. They have one that has room for a camera with a huge lens, plus a bunch of lenses and other stuff too, but that was too big for me.
The problem with the backpack is it's not really that quick to access. I'll try it out for a while, but I might need to get something that will give me really quick access to the camera, but doesn't make me hang it around my neck.

Was it the waterproof kind?
I need something big enough to hold my Sony VX2000 also. I've been using a carrying type black generic bag but really want something waterproof.

Dunno - it's this one (http://www.lowepro.com/Products/Backpacks/classic/Orion_Trekker.aspx) - it's water resistant, not water proof. They have combied laptop/camera bags too.
