OK i normally shot in AV mode and I have a 1d Mark IIN now but the pictures in AV mode have stupid long shuter times with flash still. now i just on a whim(i tore my ACL and have a lot of time on my hands) tried shooting in P mode(I never use that) and it works much better. I'm going some place this weekend and while i know M is the best it will be more snap shot type shooting.. is there a fix for AV mode???Or does the camera treat it like a fill flash? it's a 420 in case you need the model..
thank's guys..

is there a fix for AV mode???Yes. It's called M mode.
Since you have some time to practice, practice with M. You'll get the hang of it and find it's not so hard.
If you haven't already done so, take a look at Flash Photography 101 (link in my sig).

Av treats the shutter speed in a manner which says "No matter how slow the shutter speed gets, I am going to use even atrociously slow speeds to capture dim available light in the scene, even when the photographer wants to use the flash as the main source of light". Stupid implementation, which Canon should really have accompanied with photographer's ability to specify 'the minimum Av shutter speed I will use with flash is X'. The remedy for this feature absence is to use M if you want to use ambient light to within reason, or use P if you don't care about ambient light at all and are willing to settle for all flash photos to be shot at 1/60
