Just wondering if anyone has had an opportunity to test the new Konica/Minolta digital 7D SLR. Any comments would be appreciated....

This is the Canon EOS digital forum, not Konica/Minolta.

I think a compare and contrast w/ Canon's vs. the other guys is always kinda useful. Some times I find it reaffirms my choice in Canon :)

---Bob Gross--- Gee, since when do we have to be so one sided. Most of the people on this forum discuss other manufactures lense, accessories, etc..Lighten up!! .
Cheers,

That's when the Talk About Photography forum comes in real handy.

Actually, since this is the Canon EOS digital forum, if you were asking for a comparison of Canon XXX to Konica/Minolta YYY, then that makes sense. But not for direct discussion of Konica/Minolta. It just makes more work for the moderators.

Canon 20D > Konica Minolta 7D.
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/minolta-7d.shtml
........according to this review.
I will say this though, Minolta, being the last to join the DSLR party, did a pretty good job with thier first body. Built in IS and etc.... Would be interesting to see what they come up with in the future. The test shots I saw from dpreview was good, but not stunning.
As a whole package, Canon is still leaps and bounds ahead of KM.
Just my opinion.

You really think that based on one review which was very favourable? I'd wait until DP review or Roger Galbraith comes out with one before I would start thinking it's no good. Personally I think the specs are awesome, KM really though outside the square, it really looks are far more complete camera than the 20D which isn't what it should have been. Personally I think the 20D isn't much of an advance on the 10D, Canon could have and should have done much better.
I was really dissappointed in the 20D I had hoped for so much more, the lack of spot metering was the nail in the coffin for me now I'm seriously considering purchasing a 1D2 which was far more than I had wanted to spend. Maybe Canon will do the right thing and finally introduce the 3D or whatever they want to call it. It needs to come and quickly.

I love the Idea of the Minolta 7D...
Think how cheap a birder can get a500mm prime with IS now...
Grab Sigma 500mm f/4.5 used for about $2K (Iv'e seen the minolta mount vesions sell for even less) and a 7D will give the owner a 500mm IS prime set up for under $3,500.00 lens AND camera.
Not bad!
In a comparable Canon, a 500mm Prime with IS and body would be closer to $6.5 - $7K
No tto mention the other bargain Sigma Zoomz and other third parties...
Picture these:
Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX HSM with Minolta IS
Sigma 180mm Macro EX HSM ... with Minolta IS...
Sigma 50-500mm EX HSM "Bigma" with IS...
This is some cool stuff! And.. were I a first time DSLR buyer.. this would also be some VERY compelling stuff.
I just wish Minolta would make there next DSLR in a Canon mount...

I think Canon has released 5 digital slr's n the time Minolta has developed one.
I have a friend who is so pissed at Minolta for not getting in the digital game he could eat nails.
He was heavily invested in Minolta glass and opted to give up on them because Canon is running away with the show.

I don't think Canon is running away with the show, if you remember Minolta was the first company to release a DSLR, the RD3000 they got burned badly so I guess they were cautious with the follow up.
Taking time to develope the D7 was probably time well spent, especially when you look at some of the me too models from Pentax, Sigma and Contax they are/were duds, KM couldn't afford to f up so they developed it properly. Even mighty Canon have stuffed up, the 20D was not tested properly before release and it showed, lots of problems and two firmware releases within months of the camera being released.
I too was pissed at KM for taking so long and ended up moving to Canon after my minolta gear died, I wish I hadn't changed over, I like the 7D far more than the 20D, now I'm forced into getting the 1D2 if I want the featurers that I use frequently i.e. the spotmeter.
