Okay, so I have the Canon Rebel XTI and a 430ex Speedlite. I just bought an Interfit off camera flash kit including 2 strobes. I also purchasd the Studio Systems 4 Channel Wireless Trigger. The whole time I'm messin around with this, I'm thinkin, I can't use my 430ex as long as I'm using this trigger unless I get a 580ex. I only thought this because at National Camera Exchange, they said the only way I could fire that 430ex as a slave is if I bought a 580. Not so true. As I understand it from research, is it true that all I need is a $10 receiver compatible with my wireless trigger and my 430ex is working with my whole kit? If this is true, doing portraits, what should I do with the extra light? :)

Do the interfit lights have built-in slave sensors?
Got a link to the product?

It looks like they have built-in slave sensors, which makes things easy. If you connect your radio receiver to your 430EX, the Interfits will fire when the 430EX does.
You could use the 430EX as a background or hair light. I'm not familiar with that particular radio set so I don't know what adapter you'll need to make it work.

heathermarie,
Can you post a link to the wireless trigger set? That way, we can help you figure out how to hook it up to your 430EX. Does the receiver have a hotshoe on it?

This is a "SP Studio Systems" Studio Flash Wireless Trigger AC - 4 Channel. - Is the brand on the box, but there is no brand on the product itself. I found this thread by Curtis N -

That is pretty much what I have except the receiver for the hotshoe. My receiver is called a "Slave Trigger" I guess and the only information I could find or something that looks anything like it is here: http://www.studioflash.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=6%2DXTRA%2DRX3000. In fact, the way you see that plugged in, is exactly how it plugs in to my Interfit EXD200 lighting kit. It works REAL slick!!!! I just want to know if I get one of those Receivers with it if it will work on my Speedlite. I am kind of scared though, in Curtis' thread, there are no FCC stuff on this. Oh! I just found ONE link, this is exactly what I have http://www.bkaphoto.com/detail.asp?section=Flash%20and%20Lighting&cat=Flash%20Triggers&product=SPWTAC4 though I paid $89.95 for mine at National Camera Exchange in Minneapolis. :P Guess I got ripped off!!

Well, that's a AC trigger set, the receiver needs to be plugged in to the AC power. And if AC is available, you might as well just use the strobes :)
Most speedlight users use battery operated trigger set for off camera lighting.

First, from the picture and description it sounds like the unit comes with a 1/4" jack and a 1/8" minijack. Usually, the 1/4" plus will go directly into most strobes [most strobes have a 1/4" socket/jack]. And I believe the mini-jack will plus into a 580exII and I presume a 480ex.
You need to confirm what plugs/cables came with the kit and what sockets the 480ex has. There will still be an issue of how to power it, if it is only AC powered [needs to be plugged in] and not battery powered.
You didn't get ripped off if you got personal and helpful service. This question of what you need to run it with your Canon 430 and other speedlites is exactly the type of question they should be able to answer.
