I turned around my 24-70 2.8 L in 1 week with CPS.
If you have the requirements to join CPS I'd do it.

In case anyone else wonders what the requirements to join are, it seems you need to be a professional photographer who makes the majority of their income thru photography, and operates thru a registered business.

Man, that sucks!
We've sent lots of lenses to Canon before, and the most any of them took was about 2 months.
Did you send it in yourself or did you take it to your local Canon retailer to have them send it off?

I don't know how may people I have talked to that have bought a Sigma or Tamron to use while they waited for their Canon lens to be repaired. I guess Canon has to do something to help the other guys.

so you're saying if we have to send in our cameras that we should just buy another to take it's place for a while?

If they are going to keep your camera for 5.5 months and you need to take pictures do you have any choice? Rent, I guess.
Personally, I would just blow the dust off my old film camera.

I sent it through a local canon retailer. The shopkeeper is a friend of mine.
He sent my lens on May the 25th. It arrived at the canon repair center on June the 18th (yes more than 3 weeks :? thanks to canon's transporter ) I saw a sheet of paper mentioning that arrival date at canon repair center.
My local retailer got the estimate on July the 9th. OK I took one week to decide whether I wanted to repair or not.
The repair cost was a little more than $1000.
(a brand new one costs >$2k here)
After a month still no news from the Canon repair center. So I decided to give them a call. As I'm not a pro, I couldn't have access to CPS and thus have a temporary lens.
After that, my local retailer decided to call another person from canon to try to have a temporary lens explaining that my lens was at canon since may the 25th. Finally, that person decided to lend me a (crappy) 70-200 non IS durnig the period of repair. So I had to go to the Canon professionnal center to get a temporary lens...
And on november the 8th I finally got my baby back
