Practicing some more with the speedlite tonight at my daughter's game. Happy with the exposures I got. I'll work on better action next time.
1. Hockey ready - two hands on the stick , stick on the ice - now somebody just pass it to me.

2. Our captain makes a turn up ice to start a rush.

3. Clear that thing!

The Speedlite really works on these. I take it your not behind the glass taking these? Great detail in the faces.

Flash mounted on camera? Or remote? Bounced off ceiling? or direct? What settings on flash? I've got the EX II and may give it a shot once my son gets going in spring hockey next week.

Thanks - I was on the bench, in the middle hanging out with the back-up goalie. (huge benches)

The flash was on camera. I had it manually set on full power. Shots were at 800 iso, 1/250, f4.5. Ambient was iso 800, 1/250, f 2.8. It was a high ceiling with the silver reflective material so often seen in arenas. I bounced it. Full power direct ( which I tried for a couple) was ghastly.

I like the way the speed light works for these. It's nice not having to shoot through the glass. I can't get on to the benches but I can get in to the penalty box most of the time. But, I can't use a speed light there.

Did anyone say anything about the flash? I've used the pop-up flash a couple times and the flash bothered me (not sure about the players). I know the pop-up can't be bounced and maybe your method makes it less obtrusive.

Dunner - no one said a thing. I even asked my daughter who had the 200mm pointed at her a fair bit as you can imagine, and she said she didn't noticed it at all. That's the bounce off the ceiling I suppose.

Awesome shots man they turned out well. How is your daughters team doing this season I assume she's in playoffs right around now ? As provincials should be next month.

Thanks !
The team finished first in the east and is bound for the Provincials April 11. It's been a good year. Hopefully it'll translate to the provincials - some strong teams on the west side though.
Cheers.

Always strong teams on the west unfortunately lol I played in that league for 15 years (east), unfortunately we didn't win any provincials but we made it to them and got to play in 'em which is better than nothing in a sense :) I miss the game. But glad to see others still playing and enjoying. Keep up the good work with the photos :)
