I know I've gone on about DSLR highlight problems before, but it's such a disappointment that I'm back shooting some film again. In practice I've found it's a less painless route to successful landscape photography.

Anyway, I was interested to read that Fuji realise what a nuisance this is and have taken the problem on. They now claim to have made good progress. I hope they're right. We'll see when the S3 Pro goes on sale later this month.

The S3 Pro's sensor has two photodiodes at each pixel location. The new design means highlight and shadow detail are assessed separately to boost the dynamic range by around 400% over conventional sensors. The S3Pro will also allow photographers to adjust the range from shot to shot to get the best out of the subject.

If this proves successful, and Canon do something similar with larger more cost-effective sensors, then I'll be a 100% digital shooter!
