View Full Version : 'Lens Used' EXIF info on RAW only?

When looking at exif info on RAW files of 10D/20D there is a very useful item called 'Lens Used'. BUT, this does not appear when shooting JPGs.
Why is this? That is a very useful piece of info when testing lenses etc.
Anyone know why this is?

Hmmm where do you see that?
I've never seen "lens used" on any of my 20D raw conversions (or my 300D raw conversions).

If you highlight the RAW file in DPP, PS, or Breezebrowser you will see 'Lens' somewhere near 'Focal Length' in the EXIF info. The position varies depending on what app you are using, but it is usually close to 'Focal Length'.

Ah yes you are right.
BB and PS show something like "Lens: 50mm"

After further investigation, I've got it slightly wrong. BB and DPP both show the correct lens info on RAW AND jpgs. It is only PS that doesn't! It doesn't show anything in the 'lens' field on jpgs.
Is this an Adobe issue?

My PS CS shows "Focal Length : 50mm" in File->File Info->Camera Data 1 menu.

It's not the 'focal length' that we're talking about, it's the lens information. If say, you are testing 2 lenses, e.g. 12-24 and 10-22 focal length is not enough. The EXIF info tells you what lens was used. As I've said, PS does not show this on jpgs, just RAW files.
Other apps like BB and DPP do, so why not PS?

Both File Viewer and Zoom Browser show this information for JPEG files.

Lots of other apps show it, the question is why not PS? This is the app that I use most for viewing EXIF info. Is it a bug?

I would ask adobe tech support

It might not be a bug, but rather a lack of PS's ability to completely understand the MakerNotes section - Canon's propietary area of the EXIF info.
From my 10D I get a couple fields, something on the idea of Min Lens Length and Max Lens Length, so if one is 17 and the other 40 then I know what lens was used. But using the same program (exifutils) on my 20D images (JPG or CR2) I do not get those fields. Which kinda sucks, really. (Edit: The new ExifUtils 2.5.5 shows these fields on the 20D.)
Parsed Example:
C:\comm\files\images>exiflist IMG_53069.CR2
Focal Length (mm) : 400.00
Focal Length Long : 400
Focal Length Short : 100
So I know that I was using my 100-400mm L at 400mm.

I see what you mean, but surely if PS can extract the info from the RAW file, it can do the same from the JPG. No?

Using ExifUtils I checked a shot that I had taken using RAW+Large JPG Fine - so this was the exact same image saved two times by the camera. ExifUtils shows the "Focal Length Long" and "Focal Length Short" for both images.
In PS CS I opened both images and checked the File Info... Camera Data 1. In the converted RAW image I get "100.0-400.0 mm" - which seems to simply be a concatentation of the two Focal Length fields. In the JPG this field is blank.
Obviously the data is there since ExifUtils found it in both images, but Adobe is failing to display it in the JPG version. So yes, this seems to be an Adobe bug.

There was a bug with the CS RAW converter that would drop some exif data when you saved to JPG. This could be the culprit but if you have the latest version then it would not be a problem.

Note that I never saved as JPG. My camera saved two versions - RAW and JPG - of the same image.

Ovi,
This is not the problem we are describing. PS does not show the lens info on JPGs from the camera, but it does on RAW from the camera. Other apps like BB or DPP show both. There is clearly an issue with PS here.
