Whether or not to buy a telephoto prime has been bugging me for a loooong time, 400mm 2.8 is what I want but can't afford; 300mm 2.8 is fine but sometimes is short, then I thought I'd use 1.4x TC to go with it. I don't really have enough money to actually buy it, but I've been lurking around some sites where they offer 9 months interest free credit payment plan.

Out of blue, I dialed warehouseexpress.co.uk(it was a long break between lectures, and I was bored) ... after speaking to sale rep about my intention just to check to see if I can get credit approval, they say they'd call me back. Knowing a student who's already in debt, who'd give me money?

So I thought ...

5 minutes later, they called me back, after confirm my name and address, they said "You credit has been approved and we are sending you a form for you to sign, lens is at warehouse waiting for dispatch" ... I was stunned, "OKay" ... I said.

Then I realised that I just bought a Canon 300mm 2.8 IS L!

I hate when that happens! That baby is a sweet performer and the TC does it no harm.

Nice move sGu - you won't regret it!

I've just sent out 3 emails asking for jobs, hope somebody needs something covered so I can make some money back to pay for this "baby".

gmen, I thought about 300mm 2.8 IS over 400mm 2.8 IS, price is one thing, secondly I have more use of it than 400mm. With this one, I can shoot both indoor and outdoor events, while 400mm would be a bit too long for indoor ones.

Now I just need to buy a 2x TC to accompany the 1.4x, then I'm set!

Don't feel bad - I've had a few "accidents" in the last year or two myself. :)

That should be a sweet lens.

hehe. I have a Sigma 70-200F2.8 reserved for pickup at Park Cameras this weekend.

I hope they don't have any 20D's in stock! ;)

i love accidents like that...

...like when i accidentally walked into the camera store and bought a 20d body.

sGu

Well, now I'll have to work out a very detailed plan on how to make enough money out of this by-far-the-most-expensive-piece-of-L, just to pay for itself!

Regrets? Hell no!

I can see accidents like this happen in the future, a few more times, say 400mm 2.8 IS, and a pair of 1D MK II's? ... I can foresee the future

Are you talking about this (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=183202&is=GREY ) $3700 lens? That's damned expensive, i'd have thought the only people who bought that would be loaded or professionals who need it. The 400mm lens is about $6K!!!

Yep,...

Thats the lens he's talking about.

Damn. I earn a pretty good amount of money and I thought hard about whether the $370 Tamron was worth it to me. For a student to buy a $3700 lens by accident, with no clear use for it, seems... um... an interesting choice. You can say no!

Then again if it's your hobby and you don't mind working for 400 hours (guess) or so to pay for it, go for it! :)

Apologies if that came over as offensive, it was just an observation, it looks like you were almost railroaded into buying it by that store. Of course I was completely wrong (which isn't that unusual)...

And damn, those are good photos! I'll look forward to seeing what you can do with even better glass :)

A friend of mine lives about 10 houses down from me, and I can see right in his front window. With a lens like that I could give him photos of himself. Sent from an anonymous email address it could be quite shocking to get pics of yourself at home!

it was only yesterday when I went to calumet and almost cracked under pressure when I saw a 20Dbox and a bg-E3 box next to it... :P

Congrats on your purchase. Good luck paying for it. (if that's the case, I wonder if I should order a 1DsMKII 8) )

The only way anyone would get my 300 2.8L IS is to pry it from my cold dead hands. It is without a doubt the best long prime lens that is in the current Canon line-up, even better than my 500 4L IS.

It is still magic with a 1.4TC and you will be amazed at how well it holds up with a 2.0TC

I've seen your shot with 300mm + 2x TC, and was amazed at quality of it!

Once I get it, I'll do some test shots and post some results, can't wait! :D

Not if I cover my tracks well - I can make myself pretty hard to find, electronically, using anonymous proxies, hotmail accounts, and such ;)

The hard part would be concealing where the photo was taken from. No, try it and you'll be corresponding from a whole new location where the only glass you'll be loking through has chicken-wire embedded in it.

Oooh, hadn't though of that. Obviously it's not a serious idea anyway, it was a joke while we were drinking in his apartment. I remarked I could see in his front window from my house, and could take photos if I had a bigger lens. I'd probably need a 400, which I don't have anyway.

Try living up to your name - a little crawling through the weeds/woods to get into a good, neutral location . . .

I had a similar sittuation a few years back, EXCEPT, I was standing in the store fondeling a Bronica SQa(Medium format) camera, along with two lenses and three backs. How much? DONT ASK!
I ended up taking the whole works home that day.(had to hide my credit cards from myself for a long time after that  )

KennyG, how come you like the lens some much? How come not the 400 version?

Dude, I think that's one excellent mistake....can I count flying to NYC, walking into B&H and walking out with a 400mm L IS an accident?

sGu

Pretty Much, and that was just ONE of these incidents(Albeit one of the largest). I was on a first name basis with both the owners of, as well as all the employees at the two largest stores in Vegas. (Sahara, & Casey's)
I'm trying to get better now, HONEST!
BTW, Anyone visting these stores for Canon equipment, see Karl at Sahara, and Jerry at Casey's, as they are the Canon EOS Gurus in their respective stores.
