Just thinking, often I like to go out shooting, wandering around but don't carry any extra gear, just what's in my hand and maybe an extension tube.

But I often like to do this with my 16-35 2.8 II. Just wondering about carrying a 100 2.8 macro with me for variety and the thought just came up, can you use the lens extensions 1.4x and 2x with this lens. If it worked with the 2x it just might make a reasonably compact travel 200mm f5.6 lens if it's sharp with the extender and I'd have the option of a macro + 100mm lens. It just seems handy if it'd work.

Can you put the extenders on the macro? Has anyone tried it?

I'm shooting the 5D, would that make any difference, theoretically this sounds like a good idea, put the macro and an extender in my Crumpler and maybe a sandwich and take off for the day to wander around the city.

You are talking about teleconverters. I don't think they will work on the 100 macro.

Edit: It will not work on the 100 macro.

I don't remember what combination (tubes, 1.4x TC) I used for these...

100 2.8 macro without 1.4x TC (I might have used the tubes...not sure)

100 2.8 Macro + 1.4x TC (again, not sure if I used tubes or not...pretty sure I was testing out the 1.4x TC on the 2 shots)

OK, I remember now. Since I had the Canon 1.4x TC, I needed to put at least 1 tube in between the TC and lens.

So it went like this: 5D -> 1.4x TC ->Tube ->100 2.8 macro.

I think if you buy a Kenko TC, you don't need to have the tube there.

Thanks, it probably isn't a good idea anyway, seeing that at 200mm I wouldn't have IS and I really think that's an asset. But it still seems to be a good idea to consider the 100 2.8 macro anyway, I really like the photos people post here on this forum with that lens. I do use extension tubes quite a bit on my zooms but considering the macro anyway.
