Hi All
I am just about to order this lens, I have a couple of questions.
Is it too heavy to hand hold, do I need to mount it on a tripod all the time? If so then I guess that answers my second question of do I need the tripod mount.
Or
Can I mount it on a tripod with the mount , or will it topple over
cheers

It's not too heavy to hand hold at all.

Hi:
In answer to your questions,
1) No, it's not too heavy for hand-holding; actually most people prefer this lens to its big brother the 2.8 L because of weight.
2) I haven't used it on a tripod yet and if you have steady hands, it doesn't need to be mounted (except in very low light)
The tripod ring is ridiculously expensive.......wait for a used one to pop up and remember the black version is cheaper and fits this lens.
I use it with my DRebel w/grip and I find this combo really comfortable!
Just buy it....... You'll be MORE than pleased with this excellent lens.
Hope this opinion helps........by the way, which London are you in? UK or Canada?

Just kidding Drisley.......you're not too silly! (but you are a really good photographer!!)

Good lens light weight you just cant go wrong. You may out grow it and one-day want a F2.8 lens but most are very happy. Besides the F2.8 is much heavier.

Most USA folks (including me) find B&H to be a great place to buy. Some overseas folks have had issues with their policies regarding 'foreign' credit cards, but I can't help you there. Also, keep in mind any customs or import duties that might be due.
As for the tripod ring, I use it with a monopod for better balance, but the lens is not too heavy if you want to forego it. However, if you do want one, get the black one that is specified for the EF 200mm f2.8L. Except for the color it is the same ring, and it is $30 (USD) cheaper than the white one that matches the lens. You find it on the B&H site by selecting the 200 and looking for the accessories for it. Regardless of what it says (that it only works with the 200) it is the same size exactly, and works just fine.
Hope this helps.
Have Fun,

if you are going to buy it from abroad, get it from europe as the waranty will be valid in the UK - Canon UK wont touch anything that comes from the US.

Hello
Just sent my 10D off to Canon UK for a possible front focusing problem. I bought it from the states and they honoured the warranty, so think I will stick with B&H
Cheers for all yr help

The lens is easily light enough to hand hold. I do find that on a monopod the balance is all wrong though without the tripod ring, especially if you fit an extender too. It works fine but feels odd.

Ok am about to order this from B&H . does anyone have any idea what the UK Government will sting me for on Import Duty and VAT?

Although this lens can be handheld, that might negate the reason you would buy an L lens to begin with. Without some sort of support the camera shake is likely to make the images no sharper than if you had used a non-L lens.
Use a support whenever you can and your images will look much better.

I bought mine in the US, while I was there, and it came with an international warranty card, which surely is international?

Import duty is 4-6% (depending on who you ask!). VAT is 17.5% on the total cost - note that VAT is payable on the postage costs as well :( You'll probably also get stung for £10 or more 'handling charge' by the courier for sorting out the taxes.
I'd suggest working out the total cost before placing the order. Bear in mind that the pound/dollar conversion rate is usually about 2% worse than expected, when you pay by credit card (I tend to use http://www.oanda.com/convert/classic).
http://www.7dayshop.com are selling the lens for £429, including all taxes and charges. It will probably be sourced from the US but, if there is a warranty issue, you'll be able to send it back to the Channel Islands rather than the USA. Might be worth considering as an alternative?

I use my 70-200 f2.8 L IS handheld sometimes, but when covering sports I ALWAYS put it on a monopod, really saves your arms after 90minutes!
And in regards to warranty issues, all lenses have a worldwide warranty, it's the bodies etc. that you'll have issues with.

I called canon UK when I found out my camera was coming from france. They said they would only honour the waranty on European purchases.
They were very specific when they said "we do not touch equipment from the US".
The person above who had his camera fixed must have been lucky.
