View Full Version : 300D depreciation........

Sup all-
I am an amateur photographer, and have the 300D. I am totally satisfied with the 300D. If a bag of money fell from the sky, however, I would run out and purchase the 20D, because of the 8mp and the 5 fps burst.
What Im wondering is how much do you guys think that the 300D is going to hold its value over say the next year or so. I see on eBay, etc that used 300D's (kits) are in the range of 550-675 USD range. Im concerned of depreciation, do mainly to the fact that all the big camera competition is flooding the market with comparable items, and especially the addition of the 20D to the Canon lineup.
I guess what Im concerned is --- is this camera only going to be worth 300 USD next year you think? Should I try to unload it now while there is some value to be had?
Like I stated above, I really like the camera......could any of the camera hacks increase the fps on the 300D?
Thanks people,
Bill

Hey pp, the 300D will hold its value as long as you don't sell it. Think it this way if you are ever going to buy a 20D even it will loose its value in a year or so afterall its just technology. Remember the computer you bought last year what is it worth now if you sell it ?
The point is yes maybe the 300D will be worth $300 next year but so will be the 10D ($650) and the 20D ($1000).
Also sorry to tell you that the hack won't make it faster either.

You know what?
I bought my 300D with lens for $1200cdn last January.
Today, almost a year later, I saw an ad in a local paper advertising the 300D with lens for $1200. So, I felt pretty good.
It definately held it's value alot longer than the point and shoot cameras like the G3.

They all lose thier value............so use it and be satisfied with what you got now.
BUT!!! one thing that does not lose its value is a good lens.
So stock up on 'em!!!

In all my years I have never seen any peice of equipment that hlds it's value as well as a Canon Lens... it is truly astounding.
Assuming one keeps the lens in near mint condition.. it does not matter how long you have or use it. A four year old 300mm f/2.8 IS will get the same resale value as a 6 month old 300mm f/2.8 IS so long as the condition is comparable.
And that resale price is amazingly close to the cost of a new lens.
As for digital cameras.. they are electronics and thus subject to the drastic drop in value that any electronics may be subject to... thogh they clearly hold there prices better than say,.. a PC.

the rebel has fallen quite a bit in price, but it got to the point where it's almost as much as a D60  . It won't keep falling at the same rate (maybe it's because of all this 20D madness -> people selling their 10Ds cheap -> rebels have to go even cheaper).
I will keep my rebel!
(even after I buy the 20D)

It definately held it's value alot longer than the point and shoot cameras like the G3.
That's why I decided in favour of the DRebel instead of the Pro1 and moreover with a new lens it becomes a different camera ... sort of... That's how i brag about it

You must understand that because of the 20D craze, 10D and 300D prices dropped drastically. However, they are starting to climb back up as of late.
Three weeks ago, you would be able to find a 10D for $700 even $650, they are now back to the $800 range and are moving up. I assume they will stop at around $900+. but they will go down slowly over time. No need to unload it though. Unlike a computer, a good camera will always be able to take good images, while a computer will eventually die from advancements. If you are happy with the camera, don't change it. A 300D with a $600 high quality lens is a far better camera then a 20D with a mediocre $100 lens. Save your money and build a good system.

Drisley:
You will ALWAYS find someone trying to sell an item for list price. There are still camera places selling the Drebel for $1000 w/ lens and other places selling it for probably $700. So don't take any heart in seeing the same price a year later.
What is illegal/unwise of some places calling the list price of Drebel w/ lens of $1200 or $1300 USD and calling their price a sale at $900. In the USA it is illegal to sell any item above list price without telling the consumer that they are selling over list price.

also coz the limited edition of a black rebel is gonna be coming out in the US, selling for $999 that's why the current rebel has a $100 rebate.

When Canon announces the 300D replacement in February 2005, expect the 300D to drop another $150-200 from current retail - avg. about $700 with body and lens.
In late 2006, yes, you should be able to find a 300D for $350. Once they get to that point, for some strange reason, prices tend to stay flat for a while.
In 2007, you'll see the market flatten out and stay at around $275-300.
In 2008, you'll see the prices go back up as collectors pick up these cameras as collectibles - "own a piece of history" and all that jazz. :P
Just kidding. I don't know about 2008, but I have been watching prices for the past 7-8 years and this is the cycle they tend to follow. I just saw a "vintage" Nikon Coolpix 995 being sold on eBay for around $300. This is for a camera that is approaching what, 4 years old. It was Nikon's equivalent to a Canon G1 or so.

You bought your camera as a financial investment? Might want to look into Mutual Funds, gold, or something else.
In the mean time, enjoy your camera for what you really bought it for and stop looking back. You made a good choice and should find the value in the photos you take/produce from your camera--not in the camera itself.

There are a whole lot of factors:
the new camera depreciation (the biggest)
2nd hand depreciation (slower)
current rebates pushing prices down (that won't go on for much longer)
New black model pushing down silver model prices (prob not as bad as the rebates are doing i would think)
Any new model if (when) it comes out
A still very hungry market that grabs any 2nd hand unit offered.
taking all these into account....and consulting my dog for advice (buy gerkin icecream she barks-hmmm must be the pregnancy talking  )
I think.......... us$300 is too pesimistic .I think thay will be worth more than that in one year.

Your 300D depreciation has happened, to a large degree, so now it's just a camera and not an investment. Can you afford to keep it as a second body when you get the 20D?
It's light (in your kit) and it will always be a great 6mpix camera... I use mine for the "other" lens when I have a WA or macro mounted on my 20D... It's a sure bet that as soon as I mount my macro or WA lens a flock of geese will fly over and that slooow geared down macro motor or 12-24mm w-i-d-e isn't going to get my in flight shot... Having a tele already mounted on the 300D in the bag at my feet does save the day...
I'm going to carry the lenses I need anyway! The only added weight to my camera bag is the Dreb body... The 300D even stores my extra battery and memory card so that extra body is no hardship to carry into the field.
My opinion? You have paid for your 300D. Why not get some long-term use out of it?

Canon's doing that whole triple rebate with 300Ds and various lenses; does this mean there really will be a 300D replacement in Feb. 2005?
If there is a new one coming out, does anyone know what it's going to be like?
