I'm liking that B&W. I would may try just a tiny bit more contrast. But the tone and conversion are great.

With a couple of minor exceptions, I really like this shot. From the viewpoint of chiaroscuro and range of tonality, it's just great.

The disappointment comes with the out of plumb verticals and the elements that identify it as a museum rather than a working mill (the rope to keep people in line and the sign on the staircase saying "stairway").

There wasn't a plumb line in the whole room so I just kind of guesstimated. Thanks for opining Robert.

How's this for adding a little 'pop' to the picture?
Give it a little rustic look to it!

AC, did you add some USM or was it something else?

chauncey,

I boosted the tonal contrast in the image, but I'm still leaning towards your edit. In this edit it became very busy. Way more things popped out at me (like the guy standing in the door). Your edit allows me to gloss over those parts of the image.

Not sure that my edit does anything to help, but here it is:

That's some very conservative USM + midtones and highlights brought up while taking the exposure down a touch. I used the new Photoshop Express to do that quick-n-dirty touchup. ;)

BTW, I really like the picture. Should have noted that before. Stupid me! ;)

If I do an edit to a picture I just assume that the OP knows I like it. I should explicitly say so as well :)

I like it chauncey!
