I started my Canon (first serious) EOS outfit with an EOS3 and had a 28-70L attached most of the time. Since moving to digital with a 10D, I hardly ever use the EOS3 or 28-70. I use a 17-40 as my main lens with a 50mm prime and a 70-200 f4L in the bag for the rest of the time. I find this gives a good focal length range vs size/weight bag.
I was never happy with the size and weight of the 28-70 but it is a great lens. I have always had in the back of my mind to keep it for when that full frame DSLR becomes a realistically priced reality, but even when it does, there remains the size and weight issue.
What should I do? And in the future when full frame becomes reachable for us mere mortals, what are the 24/28-X high quality alternatives?
(By the way, I was thinking of selling the lens to fund a second hand M6 TTL - shock horror mentioning that in this forum, but I am building up a small light, almost non battery dependant travel kit)!
Cheers

If you're not using it, then sell it.........and invest on something that you can use more often.

Only you know if you want to sell it or not:) Do you ever have a need for F2.8? that's one thing you will lose if you sell it, the ability to properly shoot in low light..
So again.. Only you know if you need the lens or not=)
*edit* didn't see you had the 50mm..
So.. I don't know! do what you want!

I would say "sell it" ... since I hate seeing good equipment collecting dust....

I have this lens.. and use it rarely.. but If I had not gotten such a good deal a used one.. I may have "settled" for the Tamron everyone loves so much.. or even the Canon variable aperture model.. (28-80 is it?)
If it's in near mint condition you should be able to get from $650.00 - 800.00 for it. This can go a long way towards a lens that you may use more often.

Steve,
Sorry to here you don't get as much use as you would like from the L Glass but if you get serious about selling look me up. That and the 300 2.8 are my next additions

I would be interested in the EOS 3 if you are considering selling it.
Oh the Tamron 28-75 is on order for me, it appears to have 24-70 level image quality, its much smaller and lighter. It also costs a fraction of the pice.

I love my Tamron 28-75. I bought a Tamron 19-35mm because I loved the 28-75 so much. The other lens was a waste of money. I took this photo with the 28-75 on Saturday with the 20D...Dean
I am not sure why it doesn't show the photo, but if you click on the box it will bring it up...Dean

Sorry Persian, it will be a long time before I part with the EOS3. Whenever I use it, I just end up wishing for an EOS3D - the ergonomics of the 3 are damn near perfect.

Yes the 28-70 2.8L could do with a bit of a slim down but its my "standard" on the 1DMkII where it feels much more balanced. You never know where you will be in a year or twos time so I would keep it.
