Here's a nifty little 4-1/2 minute video showing it in use:

500 or 600+ depending on the size. look pretty cool though, but doesn't look like anyone on the planet uses them.

Um, I have one and it gets my vote for sheer ease and convenience, does what it says on the tin.
Brilliant in a tight space, you don't need any separation from the background,
great portability, quick to set-up and a riot to get back in the bag lol.
I have found that using one strobe inserted from above works best for me.

Here is what mine looks like when its all up, very compact and I havent found a house/room that it wont fit in. The bonus is you can back people right up to the background and you wont get a shadow because of the strob inside.

I recently got the 5x7 version, along with the train. I haven't started shooting with it yet but love the portrait lighting you have here. I'll be using a Dlite-4 inside the Hilite and a Dlite-4 in a Photoflex octobox as the main light in a setup that looks a lot like yours. What settings did you use in your Dlite configuration for background versus main light? I could play around with it, but I'd love to have a good starting point! Thanks.

I used 4 on the dlite inside the hilite and 5 on the main one, this was using a large softbox that comes with the dlite kit. Very happy with the Hilite and the effect is excellent and all my clients love the shots from it. I used Guy Gowans line and wrinke removal method on the portrait also.

Yeah for that job in particular it was no problem, flashes worked on Canon wireless system with the 430ex on a tripod. I have another 580exII so in theory I could have put that on the far side but I didnt in that case.

Borderfox

MIne is the 6x7 foot version and its plenty big for up to 4 or 5 people groups. The two vivitars will be fine with that, I sometimes use a reflector to remove a bit of shadow if needed.

This thing looks pretty sweet, I gotta say. Very portable, no need to mess around with white seamless, works in tight areas... A bit pricey for what it is, but considering time saved - not bad! Should be easy enough to slip in some white tile board on the ground for a slightly reflective effect.

I am really nervous about lighting this with one speedlight, but you are very convincing.
Is the black side dark / consistent enough to be used as a backdrop?
Borderfox
5th of June 2008 (Thu), 19:35
The black side is very consistent, I could use a reflector to fill in any shadows from whichever side I have less light on. You will be fine using one speedlight, I have an event using it on Friday night. About 30 people to shoot and re-touch so should be good to go.

Okay, so here is the million dollar question.
I am definitely going to purchase another flash.
I have two 580 exs -- when I pick up the lastolite, would you suggest another 580, or a D4?
Borderfox
5th of June 2008 (Thu), 19:45
Depends on what you use it for. If I am doing head shots I use the flash heads and if I am doing full length shots I use the d-lites. With the flash heads I don't need any power so its as portable as I am. If I didnt have the dlites I would get another 580exII and sell the 430ex, that probably answers your question. :)

I don't know about the sunpak, but I bought a vivitar 285hv, and was extremely put off with the quality. Plus, I have the st-e2 that I play with too.

In the first video below (Lasolite Highlight Backgound) he says to measure the background two stops above the main light. This is where I get confused. Where or what distance do you measure the background from? From the subject..from the camera...right up against the background?
http://www.lastolite.com/hilite-backgrounds.php#
If you have a meter reading of f22 at the background, that would mean a main light reading of f11. The camera would be set to f11 then ..correct? When I check my highlight blinks on cam, is it normal in high key setting to see the background blinking?

I'm no expert since I just got the Hilite yesterday, but I think once you set your exposure, for the Hilite and the main light/s, then meter the subject with the meter pointing in the camera's direction, with all the strobes firing. It's that reading by which you'd set the camera's aperture.
If I'm incorrect, I hope someone will correct me. I don't want to give you bad advice.

I finally got around to uploading the pictures I took with the Hilite. I have the 5x7 version with train. I used 2 Dlite-4's, one for the Hilite and the other for the main light with Photoflex medium octobox. I used the suggested 4 setting on the Dlite inside the Hilite and 5 setting on the main light, and I shot at f11 and 1/125. I tweaked the exposure and contrast some in Lightroom but not a lot of pp. And, yes, my son was exhausted and not in the mood to pose for these!

Have you decided yet how you are gonna tackle the train?
Borderfox
12th of June 2008 (Thu), 14:04
The way lastolite suggest is to open in PS and select levels and choose the white point picker and select the dark area of the train and then use the history brush to paint back in the person. Its usually easy enough to select the person from the background and paint them back in quite quickly
sdipirro
12th of June 2008 (Thu), 14:07
No, I haven't decided what to do about the train yet. The only thing I have to serve as a third light is my 580EX, and I thought about trying that as a "floor light" to see how that looked. I also thought about matching the color to the hilite background in Photoshop. I'm sure others have tried these and other techniques, but I haven't seen any discussions on it.

They are the backdrops that attach directly to the hilite. Turns the hilite into a backdrop support. They offer them in a variety of colors.

By the way, when you take it out of its pouch to open it up, STAND BACK. As it says somewhere on the Lastolite website, it "aggressively" opens to its full size. I'd like to watch people try to fold up the new 7x8 version their first time! I had a few choice words to say as I tried to fold up the 5x7 the first time!

I had a problem folding my 42x74 impact reflector.
I found that wedging one end into my couch where the seat and back met was the easiest way to have the other end stay still while I twisted my end...

LOL, I got the large 5-in-1 round reflector right in the face the first time I opened it... and I tried to be careful! a 6x7' box would probably mean knock out!

Thinking about getting the 7x5 background, just wondering about the lighting to light it... I use a Stellar 300 as main light in an umbrella box. I have an old portaflash light, would that be enough to light it, should I get another one so I have one both sides?
Or one or two(?) Stellar tungsten 500w that are about £50 each?
Unless you think my 580 and 420 flash will be enough.

Its a satiny white, at least thats how I would describe it. Like an opaque shoot through umbrella material look.

A bottlecap for the Lastolite HiLite is a cover and train all in one to go over the Hilite.
I believe they have black, green, blue and grey...

I go between strobes (400w Elinchrom D-lites) and 2x 580exII and 1x 430ex to light it and both methods work out very well. I have the 6x7 foot version, very compact and easy to carry around.
Borderfox (Or anyone having this and Speelite's),
If I buy this, I was looking to use Speedlite's to light this up.
I would be using 1 or 2 580EX's to light the 6x7 up.
Have you tested this out and know what F-Stops you were able to pull over-all?
Thanks!

I got the HiLite today and tried it with my Elinchrom D-Lite 4's. I was astonished at the quality of the results. Really clean white backgound and the subject perfectly exposed with no flare. The pics have that professional look even though I am new to studio lighting and I am still getting used to the Elinchroms. I am very, very pleased with the purchase.
The downside is getting the HiLite back into the bag. I could not manage it despite several attempts and lots of swearing. There is a YouTube vid showing how it is done and it seems so easy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tS-N9eJzgxg
Don't believe it!
Otherwise, a fantastic piece of kit.

John

Sorry Mario,
I don't know what you mean, I stick the flashes in it and use fec on the master to vary the power, if that doesn't work then I switch to manual and adjust as necessary. Hope this helps

Carrigman the key to getting it in the bag is to hold the diagonal end against your stomach and then pull the opposite end towards you and twist.

Enjoy.
When you put it on, you need to lock it down with the corner posts. It won't just "hang", so to speak. The best thing that I have found is to set up the hi-lite, then lay the backdrop flat, put one corner of the top on, and pinch it into place with the corner brace. Do that at all for corners, the go back around again and straighten.
If you find a better way, I would enjoy hearing it. Have fun!

Question: Did your Hi Lite have any wrinkles on the white surface, or was is completely smooth?
I've tried to take a picture of mine, but you can't see the wrinkles well at all.
Mine has wrinkles (almost like pinch marks) along the left hand side, right about the middle of the HiLite, and on the right down towards the corner. The surface of the HiLite is not completely smooth, and I'm wondering if this is just the way it is, or if I may have gotten a defective panel.
The wrinkles don't show up in any photos, so I suppose it's really a non-issue, but I was just curious.

Hmmm...on closer inspection mine are more like fabric pulls/pinches. But, they're not visible in a photograph, so no harm done.

Just a few quick question on your flash setup, how do you trigger everything, is the 580 that you use for your main light on your hot shoe. is there any problems with communication with the flashes? have you tried the ST-E2?
The reason im asking is i already have the 6X7 and a few cheap lights but one has just packed in. I have a 430ex and was looking to get a 580 anyway but just trying to work out what else i need. im thinking i might need 2 580's

For what its worth, I went with two AB800s -- one loaded in the background and one as the key light. The recycle times are worth it, at least for me, because I shoot like a machine gunner.
The AB400s would be plenty, as I only run my background light at half power.
I point this out mostly since you will drop as much on two 580s as you would on two AB800s.

I have done a few shoots with the highlite and strobe lights in peoples houses but the pain in the backside bit was bringing and setting up the lights. At least with the 580's it would reduce the amount I have to bring around and try to fit into my car (not a big one)

Theres no doubt. One of the reason I bought 'bees was that they are relative small, but made of lexan, so they are also reasonably tough. I dont think you will be disappointed by the 580s, though, and they are more flexible -- after all, I own a pair as well!

Here is my first high key shot:
1) AB800 stand mounted at half power camera right. This is loaded into the background, but I left the dome on. That accounts for the slightly grayer tone in the right of the photo. Next time, I will remove the dome so the light fires bare bulb.
2) AB800 in shoot thru umbrella camera left at about 25 degrees down angle.
3) Lastolite tri-grip white reflector camera right.
I am VERY pleased -- plus the client was BLOWN away.
