A freind was telling me that a Canon insider mention they may bringing out a 200-500 EF Telephoto Zoom Lens. Take this for what it worth I am getting this second hand. Which means it is probally not true. But has anyone else heard this?

I would guess f4 to f5.6. Again, I am getting this second hand. But my friend said f4 to F5.6. I am incline not belive him. I thought Canon Reps are not allowed to disclosed any type of future product information.

Canon Reps aren't even given this information until Japan is essentially loading crates full of product and pushing them this way. (it's not that bad, but pretty darn close).
Seriously, at least here in the US, Canon Reps don't receive hardly ANY lead time with regards to new products before the official press release.

Not quite sure if this 200-500 range is something really practical in terms of combining useful maximum aperture and zoom range.
On the other hand there are products out in that area :p

Canon Have 100-400mm L lens so I'm not sure that this rumor is truth. I hope they will make 100-400mm IS but with fix 4.0 :) That would be avesome lens :)

i really want a 2-5, it'll save me from buying the 500 big gun.
plus, the focal length is perfect, 24-70, 70-200, 200-500! :)
now, aperture... preferably F/5.6 at 500mm, and not ... F/6.3...
canon should replace the current 100-400 with 200-500, 5 stop IS, twist zoom (no more push and pull please), same or better glass.

I attended a meeting with a Canon rep yesterday and she asked what lenses we would like to see. I told her an EF 200-500 f/5.6 L IS USM would be great. Her response was "That is feasible, I'll pass it on". She was quite pleased to hear a legit lens, and not some oddball fantasy lens. Now the question is, will Canon listen?

Not true. I've had a rep have 40D information late summer before it was announced. Unless that's when Japan shipped them.

f5.6 would be too damn slow!! I say a 300-500 f2.8-4 would be a lot nicer! Or even a straight 300-500 f4, but no slower!! Of course "L" glass and I.S. would be a given!

I am sure you would, considering the 500 F4 is 5600USD I dont see a remote chance of that ever happening

What I'd love to see is a 300-500 f4L IS - should be cheaper and lighter than a 200-500 and offer a point of difference from the Nikon 200-400.

Aw man! You should have asked for a 14-1200mm f/1.2L IS lens for less than $1000 and lighter than the 70-200 2.8L IS. What WERE you thinking?!
LOL seriously, well done. Let's hope her word actually has some clout.

I think I would rather see a 500 f/5.6 L IS. It would be cheaper, lighter, and probably sharper than a 200-500 f/5.6

I wonder if it would be push-pull like the 100-40 or twist-zoom.? Personally at that focal range push-pull make more sense to me, but then I like Marmite.

An awesome but heavy lens that would NOT be a replacement of the 100-400 :P
All I'd like is a 100-400 with upgraded USM and 5-stop IS, Maybe a bit of balance improvements...Thats all
