I just bought a Powershot A400. Have installed the CD Camera Solutions with WIA driver for my Windows ME.

Then connected my camera and switched on to playback mode.

When my PC finds the camera, it first says Canon Digital Camera is found. Then it says Windows is installing the software for your new hardware. Then it hangs forever.

Can any one help me on this? I am not able to download my pictures to my pc....

thanks in advance..

You should go to the Canon website and download the WIN Me drivers. I'd remove your previous version first though.

This is the driver you need: WIA Driver 6.2.5 for Windows Me

Also, it may be that your PC does not have the latest USB drivers installed. What kind of PC do you have? I have a MSI mainboard that runs the latest Via drivers. This may not be your case but some people never update anything on their PC. Go to Windows Update and check you are up-to-date., etc

It is best to keep upgraded with computers. Windows XP Pro is the format of choice for the new Windows computers. What kind of system do you have? How much RAM?

Also, the card readers are a handy way (the best I think) to download pictures and movies to your computer, I've seen them for as low as $9.99 at Fry's.

WinMe is somewhat less than reliable. I was at a Microsoft presentation where the presenter described the Me design process as "Take Windows 98 and fix it so nothing works.". Of course, he also said the only security patch for Me was Windows XP, and he was a security, not operability, guru, but . . .

I'd strip out the drivers, uninstall the Canon software, reboot, then re-install and go out to Canon's website to get the latest driver and software updates available. Then, and only then, would I try to install the camera.

This is a known Windows ME issue involving 0 byte OEM files.

Follow the instructions in the following MS Article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B281967

Or better yet get rid of Win ME.
