It's amazing how different photography equipment has changed from my Minolta 102 days! Although, the basic principles of photography haven't. But I am still amazed at how sophisticated the average viewer has become! It must be a by-product of technology. :)

Anyway, I have only recently rekindled my passion for photography. But I have noticed that people in general seem to be drawn more toward the unusual photos, rather than the usual. For example, landscape pics, although are very pretty, tend to be 'calendar' pictures, unless there is something unique.

From a market perspective, does anyone have any thoughts on viewer trends or tendencies?? What is it that draws a viewer to look more at one picture than another?

I don't know that I can answer your question about what draws the viewer, but I do know that lately I've been less satisfied with calendar/postcard type shots.

I'm really pleased with this G5 shot technically, but the postcard thing leaves me a bit deflated. Do you know what I mean?

On the other hand, when I really started looking, I was delighted with the unique bark detail I found (below). The downside was the weird angle I had the camera, tripod and my neck set to!

Yes, people are looking for something different, but that means we have to see better!

Sam,
I agree with you completely! Trying to 'see' better is a lifelong challenge. Some days we are better at it than others...

I like your pictures. Your panorama is well done. What I like about it is my eye is caught by the ruin, then wanders from left to right, caught in that feeling of isolation. The clouds and the haze also lend itself to the ruin's sense of long forgotten mystery. Did I get carried away??

Here's an interesting link I have explored on compositional discussions:
