Hi guys,

I am thinking very seriously about getting a 70-200mm L is and an extender to go with it.

Should i go for the 1.4x or 2x?? Is the only difference the amount of stops i will loose?

Many thanks

Hi guys,

You will loose one stop with the 1.4x and get 1.4 more focal length (280 max) and you will loose two stops with the 2x and get max focal length of 400.
But, if this is for a f/4 lens you will probably loose auto focus if using 2x

OK... if you want a 300mm or a 400mm lens the best thing to do is go an buy a lens that has that focal length straight off. The Extenders are handy for a quick fix but they are no subsitute.

Saying that, the 1.4x delivers better results than the 2x. As "oddne" mentioned, if it's the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L then you will lose AF on anything except a 1 series body with the 2x TC.

Yea, used my 1.4 TC the other day, was great. Very usable and sharp!

Heck, I might as well chime in here, too. Definitely the 1.4X like everybody else said. :D

I have both the 1.4x and the 2x and both are great.

My copy of the 2x makes me not want to get the 100-400L when I use it with my 70-200L 2.8

I have used the 70-200 with the 1.4x and 2.0x and to be honest I was less than impressed with the 2.0x. If I go out with the 70-200 I always carry the 1.4x with me as there is little compromise on quality and it gives you a bunch more options.

I have the 70-200 2.8 and the 1.4 and it works great, but I usually find myself using the 1.4 on the 300 4L instead of the 70-200 because you wont get a whole lot as far as added focal lenght out of the 1.4 on the 70-200. But from what I hear the 1.4 is a much better piece over the 2.0 in image quality. Below is a sample of the 1.4x on my 300 4L.
