well this was difficult. i should have known what i was getting into when i saw drew/bacchanal's shots, but it was worse than i expected. absolutely no chance of using a zoom, so it was 3200 and primes all the way. ironically, the best light on Greg Dulli was when he wandered away from the mic stand and over to the side of the stage where Jeff Klein was...the drummer had the best light of all, but also had an annoying mic stand in the way.

Wow, i'm very disappointed with the dise... I've never had any trouble in there with lighting. looks like you either got the lighting guy's off night, or it was someone new. I've shot in there on ISO 800 with a 50mm 1.8 and end up shooting 1/120 @ f2.8 or more. I dunno. (Then again, I also ask the lighting guys to give me all they got and I'll send them the pics, that usually makes them more excited to provide lots and lots of light)

These are pretty impressive, the best I've seen from this tour. It looks like you were shooting at similar exposures to me, but I was shooting about 1-1.5 stops under exposed much of the time. :~(
1-3 are all excellent. I think I'm going to go reprocess my files after looking at your conversions on 2 and 3. Those are just lovely.
#8 at 1/20 135mm on the 30D...now that's livin' on the edge! I noticed that case too, didn't think to get a shot of it. Someone on their crew must have a sense of humor.

It's not the venue, it's the band...they are allergic to light. I'm willing to bet the opening band had plenty of light on them.

thanks drew. yeah, these actually turned out a lot better than i was thinking after i left the venue. for the b/w conversion, i've been letting ACR do the greyscale in auto, and it works pretty well...i rarely tweak the individual color channels, but do adjust the exposure, brightness, black level, and contrast via curves a bit.
i'm off to the Paradise in about one hour...hopefully the boredoms have better light tonight!

I like #2 and 5.
Don't like the blues in #4 (again)

I know it's not the venue... I've shot there before.... knowing the band is allergic to light explains everything.

Very nice set and definitely the best live shots of the Gutter Twins I have seen. For some reason these guys seem to have a serious aversion to light! (Are they vampires?)
#2 is a great capture of Greg Dulli.

I'm shooting The Gutter Twins on 7.4.08. I know very little about them. Doing some research on them this weekend. Anything interesting i should look out for. Are these guys getting any airplay in the States/Canada

There aren't any stations where I am that would play the Gutter Twins, but Lanegan/Dulli each have their followings. The Gutter Twins is just kind of a project more than a real band (Lanegan never seems to do the same thing for more than about 5 minutes). Anyway, the touring band is essentially the Twilight Singers with more involvement from Lanegan.
Lanegan pretty much just stands there in the same basic pose for the entire set while Dulli moves around a bit. Dulli will change instruments a few times during the set and at times look directly into or gesture to the camera. Lanegan may scowl at you, but that's about it. In general the thing to know is that there won't be much light. Bring your f/1.4 or better lens.
