It sure is fun to guess but Jeff Schewe, who is certainly in the know, drops a very broad hint in this thread (http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?14@@.59b4d563/16) on the Adobe forums.

If a new version come out, current LR users will have to pay a upgrade fee?

>>Rendering out the raw file to run a Photoshop type plug-in on the gamma encoded file (making a tiff) is NOT the way I want to be dealing with raw files. Dodge/Burn, and optimal output sharpening can/should/will all be done right in the raw workflow. That would be the Lightroom way...
I like that. Bring on v2... but please, do some more release candidate testing this time. I'd rather wait a few additional weeks than see another 1.4 type mistake.

Most likely, yes for a version 2 product... doubtful for a 1.x release. I don't know that they ever had a history of a fee for a .x release.
But I'd be a <little, this is Adobe after all> bit surprised if version 2 came out before they finally released the full SDK... guess we'll have to wait and see what's up their sleeve come wednesday. I tell you, I will NOT be happy to have to pay an upgrade fee so early, especially when there are glaring problems, missed usability features that even ELEMENTS has, and the like.

I am with David. I think it is more likely that we will see a normal 1.x upgrade that may add a few new features to keep people interested in LR while they work on 2. It seems to early, even for a program that is in early stages of development, to being moving on yet. It would be more likely that we would see a beta before anything else imo.
But heck, what do I know :).

Jeff's certainly not giving much away there is he? :D
I doubt it would be a 2.0 release even if there was one, probably 1.5, overstepping the pulled 1.4 maybe?
I agree with Riley, I think its too early in its life to go onto 2.0. That and I don't want to have to spend more money :D

Yea, I will admit that to some degree, I am hoping I am right for that reason :).

While it certainly could be another .dot release, it certainly is not out of the realm of possibility that version 2 will be released on Wednesday. Remember that the final version of Lightroom shipped on February 19, 2007 so its already been 13 months since release. And if you consider that it was in public beta for several months before the final version shipped, its quite possible to see a version 2 soon.
Back in late January Scott Kelby announced to the world that he had seen "the next version of Lightroom (http://www.scottkelby.com/blog/2008/archives/941)" (click on link to read article). That statement stuck me as rather odd but he probably was not under a non-disclosure agreement at the time. Based on several hints I've picked up browsing around forums, I have no doubt that Lightroom version 2 is in either alpha or beta testing right now.

Thanks for the information. I've yet to install Lightroom and am still using RawShooter Professional. But I am getting closer to finally just installing it. I'll wait and see what happens on April 2nd.

I think it is a little early in Lightroom's life cycle to have a paid upgrade already. I can see them releasing a new version but at no charge. Probably not all the feature enrichment that we might want but enough to keep us interested and to certainly reward the user community for the 1.4 debacle.
If they do charge for the upgrade it is then time for everyone to evaluate it and decide if it is for them. I own three licenses so it can start to get a little on the expensive side.

I'm definitely in for a feature bump, paid or unpaid! They never re-released 1.4 since that debacle so maybe theres some truth to this. Hoping for the world (or at least 1/5th of the features on the kelby list!) but not _expecting_ to be impressed. Jeff talkeding smack about Aperture is a good sign tho! Between new Nikon lens announcements and this one its going to be painful for me being on travel away from the 'net!

I loved to use Rawshooter Pro, and at first after I loaded my free copy of Lightroom (provided to me as a registered paying customer for Rawshooter), I resisted using Lightroom and would fall back to RSP. Now, however, I find no real reason to go back to RSP from Lightroom. While I do not like having to first 'register' images into the LR database (unlike the more free form 'edit any file you put into this folder' approach of RSP), I have not found any function which I would need to go back to RSP for that capability. You might want to finally install LR and get accustomed to it.

It turns out my guess:wink: was correct as Adobe released Lightroom 2.0 Public beta earlier tonight. It can be downloaded from: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/lightroom/
It will be interesting to hear the comparison of the Dodge and Burn tools in Aperture and Lightroom.
* Localized corrections — Enhance specific areas of an image for unsurpassed nondestructive flexibility and control reminiscent of the traditional darkroom dodge and burn experience.
* Improved organizational tools — Find the images you need quickly and easily.
* Multiple monitor support — Add an additional monitor to efficiently manage photographic workflow and presentation.
* Flexible print package functionality — Create custom layouts containing multiple sizes of a photograph on a single page.
* 64-bit support — Lightroom 2.0 now takes advantage of the latest hardware architectures with improved memory handling and performance.

Great stuff, localised adjustments, post-crop vignetting, new sharpening controls!! Do we need our copies of CS anymore?

Adobe are going to have to seriously convince me to get the next upgrade of PS. Are they doing themselves out of sales here?

Yay for no longer needlessly creating PSD files....
Wonder how much this is going to cost us to upgrade. Version 1.x seemed to be a pretty shortlived product.

Version 1.x seemed to be a pretty shortlived product.
Version 1 was released February last year, and I'd guess it'll be another few months at least before version 2 is released properly, so that's a fairly normal upgrade schedule.

Question I want to know is will it be more inline with the US price, i.e. £150 (US) £205 (UK)?

I doubt that will be announced until close to the end of the beta cycle. Upgrades are usually way cheaper than the initial cost though, so it's not going to be huge, I wouldn't have thought.

The creation of a tiff or psd file really hampered my processing time. I even added sata drives so I wouldn't take one drive too long. This is a welcome move.
I'll still use CS3 quite a bit for my sharpening, selective editing (layers) and framing but the integration of the two appears to be nearing completion.
30 day beta?

Exactly the same situation as me. I'm really looking forward to playing with this. Going to download now.

It's a 30 day beta as standard, for people who don't currently own LR.
Anyone with a 1.x serial number can use it until it expires on 31/8.
And anyone with a 1.x serial number can invite other people to use it for the full term (to 31/8) too.

I read that its not compatible with 1.x libraries yet, so make sure you backup before transferring all to the Beta. I personally wouldn't because it may have lots of bugs in it. Stick with your 1.x until the full 2.0 version is released and have a play in the meantime. That's what I'm doing.

Just install them side by side and keep your 2.0 as an EXPERIMENT not as production.
