Guys...

I had previously borrowed an aging 70-200 2.8L and totally enjoyed it. I had no idea how wonderful owning a brand new one would be! I shot two U9 soccer matches and an indoor church service with the new lens and my 10D. I'll try to summarize my happy results, as I have not uploaded any images yet.

The contrast is much improved over my 17-40, as is the sharpness and color. I shot in AV mode at 2.8 most of the time and got great focus - most of the time.

I'm glad I took the plunge. It's incrementally better than my other "L", the 17-40 and light years better than my 28-135 IS.

Enjoying photography to the max...

Try a 1.4x on it, you loose a stop but not much by way of quality. Makes for a great combination

Thanks, Chris. That's my next purchase. I just added a monopod (poor man's IS) and a battery grip for the vertical controls.

I cannot take people seriously who compare super wide angle zooms to medium tele zooms. Sorry, but the way you compare them is ridiculous.

Chris is right. I have just bought a 70-200 2.8L and the 1.4x extender and it works a treat. To check the performance of the 1.4x extender I took a couple of photographs (one with and one without extender) and you cannot really tell the difference. Top drawer.

Mark.

Thanks, Spatch. I look forward to getting the extender in the next few weeks, maybe for Christmas!

EXA - I agree in principle. I'm comparing Apples and Oranges, to be sure. Still, I was very pleased with the contrast, color and sharpness of the 70-200 f/2.8L. Maybe I should have stated that and ended it there.
