View Full Version : Breezebrowser won't open copied files

I've just been copying some edited and unedited D60 jpeg images to and from my desktop PC to my new laptop with a USB bridge. On my desktop I've recently got Breezebrowser which I also copied over to the laptop via the bridge (not sure if this is within the terms of the license !)

On the desktop Breezebrowser still opens my old images OK no matter how many times I've edited them with Adobe or ACDSee. But once I have transferred the same images to the laptop via the bridge, although it will still open the thumbnails and show the full file details (lens and camera settings etc) of any untouched original images it just won't show the full size images of these. Also, all it will show for images I have already played around with on the desktop is the basic properties (I realise the other date was already lost in editing) with the thumbnails just having a red cross on them. The help manual says this means they have been corrupted but although I've tried some of the help tips about restoring thumbnails etc the problem is still there.

Other programs such as Adobe and Picture and Fax Viewer still open all the copied images full size with no problem at all.

Could this be because the desktop where I first downloaded the images is running XP Home with the NTFS file system and the laptop has XP Professional with FAT 32 ? And if it's that, why do none of the other softwares have a problem with this ? Other files such as Excel etc can be transferred and opened fine too.

On the same subject can anyone tell me why FAT32 file systems are still being pre-loaded (this is a brand new Compaq notebook) when Microsoft apparently recommend NTFS as a better system ? I believe I should be able to convert the laptop to NTFS but I understand it's a one way option so I don't want to do it if there are drawbacks or do it at all if there's nothing much to gain.

Cheers

I have only used the trial copy of breezebrowser but I noticed it made a file called something like breezebrowser.dat in the directory with the images. Maybe if you delete that file it will take care of the problem.

If that doesn't work, there is a Yahoo group for Breezebrowser where you could post your question :)

Thanks for the suggestion but I tried scrapping the copied program and downloading it again direct from the site to my laptop and now it works fine on all the copied files. Beats me ! I would still like to know more about NTFS and FAT32 though.

I'd also like to check on the Yahoo Breezebrowser Group but in their wisdom the authorities where I live blocked access to this service a while ago, as they have to at least one of the websites of contributors to this forum and some of the sites that have been posted here as links. I'll check it out anyway to see if they have chilled out now.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean???. Can you get to the site through a posted link such as BreezeBrowser Group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/breezebrowser) ?

Since Yahoo groups are mail lists, you might be able to get on the list and send/recieve the messages through your email.

good luck

There is lots of information if you go onto a search engine such as Google and do a search for NTFS vs FAT32. An interesting PDF file on the subject can be found at:

Thanks for the link Glenna. I could get through and read the traffic. I used to be registered with Yahoo Groups and then the site was closed down as far a browsers from here was concerned. Looks like they have eased off a bit although I doubt that every group is accessible. I'm not into artistic nudity though so that shouldn't be a problem !

Hope you don't think I'm being paranoid by not mentioning this country by name. Let's just say it's very hot and you have to go a long way to get a cold beer. All internet traffic is routed through one mega portal so they can block access to any site which doesn't conform to local customs and traditions.

For instance I don't know what Sheila in Sydney (regular contributor here) is into but I'll never know as I am denied access to her website as the message they flag up when I try tells me !

Uh Oh ! Having checked a few more I've just realised that it's pbase.com itself that we are denied access to from here. Am I missing something good here ?

cheers

Thanks Ken - I'll look into that. At the moment, as Breezebrowser is now working well again, I'm working on the basis that if it ain't broke I don't need to fix it. I do have a pal though who is running out of space on one of his laptop's partitions and was asking my advice on whether to convert his files and system to NTFS which apparently take up a little less space than FAT files. I didn't want to risk advising him to go ahead or to reconfigure his partitions in case we wiped his hard disc clean in the process !
