View Full Version : Bowdown to Pio - post some tribute shots
cosworth

If I could name someone who recently has made an impression on my style of shooting I have to tip my hat to BottomBracket. (TheHoff is a close second). As I wade though my shooting styles and what people tell me are my strong points I find myself in awe of friends that I've made here.
We all think the last shot we took was the best one ever. We all think that maybe one day we'll have a gallery opening that wows or shoot the biggest celeb wedding for $50k or just get recognized by peers. I see images form users here all the time that inspire me to reach for that brass ring. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brass_ring)
Pio has displayed some images of late that have validated what I like in shooting. I've been lucky enough to meet and shoot with him. I'm posting my best impersonation in colour (Times Sq. deserves colour). Find a shot in your NYC arsenal that is PIOific and post. Anything below 45th qualifies. If there was an urban shooter award for 2007 or 2008 I'd be casting my vote thusly.

BTW.your B&W street photos are in a class by themselves as well.

I have been in my own surreal world for the past couple of days; I was battling the flu and sleeping most of the time. Man this is a welcome respite though I dare say a bit surprising, as there is much talent in the Urban forum and POTN in general, and particularly from the OP himself, Jason. Hey Cos, thanks for this tribute (but aren't tributes reserved for those in decline or *shudder* no longer with us?) and coming from you it is indeed high praise. I just strive to be the best I can in my photographic niche which is the income-challenged field of street photography. Though I have been a film user for many years, my current work would be nothing if it weren't for the tips and advice that I soaked in from POTN.
For example, I just placed in an order for a 5D, but I just read Jason's IQ test for the 5D, 1D, and 20D. Now I am seriously considering withdrawing my order and go for a 1D camera. GGrrrrrrrr my mind was already set and now I am reconsidering.
Great photo by the way Jason, lots of stuff going there - I like the expression of the artist's subject with the cabs whizzing behind him. Oh yes, and I agree with the color saturation here, it is Times Square after all.
Thanks Flo and CDickey! I am now off to drink some flu meds.

Here is a shot from NYC 07. ALMOST stood in the same spot as ya Jason ;) Wicked shot might I add!
I agree... Pio is the urban master!
I will be visiting NYC again in May and I am REALLY excited because I will actually get to shoot ALL day, EVERY day for 4 days straight! :D

I realize only now that I had been liking both you - cosworth - and Pio.
Regarding Pio, I even remember coming back here to POTN to look again for him to bookmark his collection of photos, to which I go back often.
Just the other day Cosworth, I found myself doing the same with your photos - the ones on the street thread.
I find it an amusing coincidence that you are tributing Pio now. The two of you are my most favourite city/people/street photographers here and I have been inspired by you both.

Jason,
Just newbie curiosity.....was the above shot handheld at the 1/10" SS or do you carry a tripod/monopod when street shooting?
Thanks,

Certainly no apologies necessary, Jason.
Thanks for the response......monopod seems like a good idea for those types of shutter speeds.

Hey Brandon, it so hard to pick just three, that's like asking me who my favorite child is. Oh wait, I only have one. :D I'll take you up on that, though it would be funny to call it a tribute to myself! Thanks guys - been receiving lots of pm's, emails by the way asking for PP tips - all answered. Give me some time to pick 3.

What I like about Pio's work is that he captures people without them being part of the photograph directly. They frame the shot or the shot frames them.
I have a very interesting book on 20th century photographers. The amount of street and urban in there is immense. I'd love to see where we look back at our time - 40 years from now and who are the celebrated shooters.
eddarr
5th of April 2008 (Sat), 01:03
40 years from now and who are the celebrated shooters.
That's going to be tough. 40 years ago there maybe was 1000 people shooting urban (or any discipline for that matter). Now there are 5000 "good" shooters mixed into 20,000 "other" shooters. There is so much saturation that distinguishing the good from the others is hard now. And it will only get harder.
That's the wonderful thing about this thread. The acclaim for the good shooters will have to come from peers in the future and from places like this forum. The general public just can't swim through the ocean of images to find the ones that should stand out.
Pio and Jason absolutely deserve respect for the quality of images they produce. There are quite a few people here on POTN that consistently produce solid work. And it's good to see that recognition coming from their peers.
<AkulA>
5th of April 2008 (Sat), 01:06
I think thats another reason why the POTN photo books are such a good idea. A sort of way to immortalize good photos and shooters, and bring them to the for-front of the sea of images floating around the internet.

Brandon - if I were to pick my favorite photo out of all the ones I took, it would have to be the third one. It has 2 of the people who mean everything to me, and in it I am doing something that I love most.
Hey Jason, thanks for the insight on how I take pics, I never thought of it that way. And to be considered, even faintly that I may be a 'celebrated shooter', well that really blows my mind. I'm just here enjoying myself, perhaps I should find a way to break into the art scene.
Eric thanks too - POTN does have lots of talent, and if I am a doing well in my photography it is a testament to the numerous wonderful advice and helping atmosphere here in the forum.

Thanks Adam. I have a brand new 5D sitting in a box here, unopened. Reading that darn test of Cosworth had me getting a 1D body, and it is on its way here as I type :) I may end up returning the 5D, or perhaps sell it here, maybe even keeping it, I don't know.
Billo, I like those pics! 1, 2, and 4 for me. The second one does look like something I would take, hmm perhaps desaturated a bit, and the glass reflections brought out? Thanks for sharing!
Flo, thanks! It is the photo I like most. We were at a Japanese restaurant, and I went outside after ordering since I spied something that might make a fine photo. I took it, and when I turned around I saw my family nicely framed in the window, and I saw my reflection.

Adam, I went for the Mk2. I thought about the mk3, but I held off. Let's see how this camera works out. I sometimes shoot in the rain, and so far my 20D's are still fine from a little soaking. I'm not really ready to risk a new 5D to rain, but I think I will have no problems with the 1D. I am sending back the 5D today, and maybe I will pick up the Sigma DP1 in a moment of weakness.

Hey thanks NB! Your photo is very NYC, Times Square too right? Street photos are rife with technical flaws, but it is all about capturing the moment. If your photo reflects what you saw and felt during that moment, then you have done well.

Okay...how do you do it? How do you face perfect strangers and take their picture? Do you ask first? Poi, that guy wrapped in the yellow plastic standing in the doorway, did he give you the nod? Do you incurr their wrath? Do you pay them? Do you simply set up the camera just off scene and then at the last second bring your subject(s) into frame and click? Have you ever had "I your face moments" when you thought you were going the be repayed with a blackeye and broken camera?
The photos shared here are thoroughly entertaining. Thanks

Lol about paying! That's a rumor started by MDJAK ;) No I never pay my subjects to pose, I just take a photo of them. With street musicians and/or performers, I give them some change after I take a picture. I very rarely ask first, as doing so in my opinion will elicit an unnatural expression.
The guy in the doorway was taken during a rainstorm. I was standing on the street to get this photo, getting drenched. The beauty of taking photos in rain is that no one will ever accost you for doing so, they are too busy staying dry. Look at the dude at the middle of this pano, he doesn't seem too happy about me taking photos. But he's not going to go out and get wet just to tell me to stop.
http://piofort.zenfolio.com/img/v0/p595443922-4.jpg
In street photography, I love using wide angle lenses. The advantage is that you can put your main subject at the edge of the photo, and he may be looking at you but he's not sure if you're taking a photo of him because the camera really isn't pointing at him. After the photo is taken, I pretend to be interested in some other thing, so the subject relaxes and doesn't mind me anymore. See this photo:
http://piofort.zenfolio.com/img/v2/p755641626-4.jpg
I also love using my Canon G6 camera. Most people think it is a simple point and shoot camera, but it is really capable of much more than that. I have mine set on hyperfocal focusing using one of the custom function slots so that the camera is ready to take photos without the dreaded 'shutter' lag inherent in compact cameras. And the advantage of the earlier G-series cameras (G1 to G6) is the swiveling screen. With it, I can drop down the camera to waist level and take a shot without the subjects noticing it. In the following shot, if I lifted the camera to my face to take a photo (and especially if I use a big black dSLR), the people would most likely turn their heads away to hide their face.

Re: shooting people in the face - I asked a friend how he was able to get a full-face photo of a drug dealer in Portugal. He said it went like this:
Drug Guy: hey wanna buy some hash?
Me: No thanks
Drug Guy: it's good
Me: How about I take your photo instead?
Drug Guy: Ok.. 2 Euros
Me: 1 Euro
Drug Guy: Ok
The guy then poses and I take one rushed shot and then reframe to take another...
Drug Guy: You only get 1 shot for a Euro

I'm a bit intimidated by the idea of street photography. Not so much the buildings and crowds, but the individual. Seeking them out and getting them to stare down the barrel of the lense. For that brief moment there's that personal connection that runs so contrary to city living, respecting other people's space, that some folk take it as being in their face.
Thanks Poi for the examples and suggestions.
Not to suggest you guys doing this are dressed like slobs, but does your own personal appearance contribute to your success in the click? I mean, I can't believe someone looking like a tourist is at all tolerated. Is there a common or lowest denominator approach that makes the photographer bend in, become acceptable to the target as someone who isn't playing with their souls?
BottomBracket
14th of April 2008 (Mon), 05:30
Actually looking like a tourist has an advantage - people somewhat expect you to take pictures, so they don't mind. That said, I dress up neither flashy nor trashy, as the more you blend in the crowd, the better.

Thanks folks. I really like the detail that I am getting from the 20D. I think that they are great cameras if you nail the exposure, and now that they are selling for cheap they really have incredible value. I wouldn't mind getting another one (I have 2) if the price is really low and is in great condition.
I better look up on Thomas Pradzynski, thanks for the tip. Actually I was thinking about Hopper's "Nighthawks" when I was taking this picture, although it is a bit presumptuous for me to compare my photo to that.;)

I once had a teacher whose name was Kimo Donohue. He was fifth generation American. Spoke, wrote and read nine languages fluently, including Japanese and Chinese. We were very good friends. I hadn't seen him for a while and when we met up again I was teaching in the same school as he. I said hello and he didn't respond. I asked him what was wrong. He said my wife didn't like him. (We had dinner together sometime before.)
I said that couldn't be further from the truth, that my wife liked him a lot.
His response to me was: "OH, BALLS." And he walked away. Those were the last words we ever spoke.

Hmmm...that image is a scary one...and can't remember it! LOL!
Nope....this is muddy ole me:

Here are a few I took a LONG time ago. I always used to use a telephoto for street shooting, but I've been really pushed to start using a midrange zoom or even normal prime lately. Problem there is that I don't own either. :|
Anyway, sorry for the quality. I had to pull these off facebook as I was too lazy to go dig through my hard drives.
Rightmost shot is uber powerful......nice....

Thanks a bunch Tom. It's actually a shot taken back in the summer of '06. I was digging through some old folders and found it, totally brushed by it when I first looked through the folder however many years ago. Just goes to show ya, unless a shot is completely OOF or very poorly exposed, it might not be worth deleting!

Tom, that looks like fun! How come the quad is muddy, and you're clean as a whistle?
Chris I remember these photos. Quite touching, and the sepia treatment is well applied here. When are you going to get a normal zoom?

Been out of circulation for a while...GAGH!
Reason I'm "clean" is that the tires ROCK! LOL!
They just threw the muck in the right direction....

Tom, I do remember these - saturation does work for these photos, I love them. I like the inclusion of a person beside the Number 9 sculpture, and the taxi shot is a good slice of life photo. Dude seems to be staring at you by the way.

Thanks. It was taken downtown on State near Jackson. I jokingly thought about trying to pass it off as NYC but figured some eagle-eyed member might be able to tell the difference.

I've been following this thread from day one. I really admire not only Pio's work, but Cosworth's as well. I used their work and this thread as inspiration on a recent trip to NYC to try and capture something worthy of posting in this thread. Here is what I came up with:

Just stumbled on this FOrum (And will be back regularly), and I think this shot would fit the Pioific definition. Especially since he is in Pittsburgh right now at a Chess TOurney.
This certainly defines the Diversity that is New York City!

Excellent shot LPM! It really show the diversity of NYC's communities, and how chess is one endeavor that brings everyone together. Except for sore losers of course. Such a timely shot, I just returned from Pittsburgh with my son where he compete in the Chess Nationals. Thanks for sharing!

Hey Tony, I am glad that the photos shared by the people here inspired you to go out, I hope to see the photos you take sometime. Though taking photos of the homeless is part of street photography, there is much more than that. That said, the best homeless photos shroud them in a bit of anonymity and draw attention to their plight while affording them a bit of dignity.
Thanks for the comments!
