im considering buying either an st-e2 or a pocket wizard. my biggest concern between the two is being able to control your flash while its away from the camera. any thoughts?

All depends on what your shooting and where your shooting. If you only plan to shoot in doors then the st-e2 will do just fine. Outdoors it has problems transmitting the IR signal to the flash when it's not in direct line of sight and that is where the pocket wizards come in.

They are two different beasts with their own strengths and weaknesses. The ST-E2 will control a 420, 430, 550 or 580 Canon flash (or a combination of flashes)using ETTL or manual (the 420 doesn't have a manual setting) using optical technology.
The Pocket wizard by itself does not a lot, you need at least two of them ( 1 transmitter, 1 receiver) to control 1 flash and additional receivers for other flashes. They work in manual only as there is no feedback to the camera.
Indoors the ST-E2 works well, outdoors its range is limited, although I have used it in the entrance to caves and in chimneys. The pocket wizards are RF (Radio) and will work over a longer distance outdoors and through walls indoors.

is it possible to manually adjust the flash from the actual st-e2? For instance, if it on a tripod across the room, can i adjust the exposure from the camera?

You can adjust flash exposure compensation on the camera and have it applied to the (canon) flash. You can also adjust ratios. You can't change manual power levels.

Lots more remote control with the ST-E2 I think. And lots less money. Lots less range.
BTW - Love your Screwey series....

I bought an ST-E2 and I'm waiting for delivery. I went this route since in the future you can also add Radiopoppers and get the best of everything but it is still useful without them.
My question: if you have the ST-E2 is there any reason to keep the OC off-camera flash cord? Do you ever use the cord for simplicity or is the transmitter small and quick enough to make the cord pointless?

St-E2 and Radio Poppers, the RP's add radio control of the ETTL features of using the ST-E2.
Now that I've seen some demo shots I realize these things are real.

I have an ST-E2 and I still use the off camera flash cord when I use my flash bracket. With the flash directly above the ste2, it doesn't always fire in sunlight.

Take a look at the section called "ETTL Wireless Flash Tutorials".
