Shot with a Canon DRebel / 50mm f/1.8 Lens / 550 EX flash (flash was pointed off to the ceiling for bounce)
This picture isn't touched up at all, just what came out of the camera.... Please comment... if it's a really technical eval, please use simple terms, as I'm relatively a beginner...

That is a darling shot! Great lighting and expression.
My only suggestion is to crop the photo closer to the subjects so they take up most of the area and the dark items on the wall don't distract.

As jim said, i'd crop it closer, otherwise it's fantastic

Everyone seems to talk about post-processing... I generally just crop a bit when printing and such. I actually took an 8x10 of this, cropped very close. Should I have done more post-processing? What does that really gain me?
Lighting:
What I don't understand is that 99% of the time, I can do this for portraits using the 550 pointed at the ceiling, and it gives a wonderfully warm (I'm not sure that's technically correct) colors and feel. BUT when I'm trying to get a group together... it always comes out slightly dark around the edges using the 500 straight at the group...

Jees, I hate to sound like a broken record here, but does ANYONE actually bother to read the Notes on Posting Images sticky? 3 and 1/2 megs is a pointless waste of bandwidth for this shot! I mean, WHY post a shot that is 3072 pixels wide if it is going to be resampled down to 800 ! ? !
PLEASE shrink this monster down to <800 pixels and repost! Not everyone has a DSL line.

Ya buy ‘em books, and all they do is eat them!

Rad,
I apologize. I was actually trying to get comments on a non-processed image, I'll try shrinking it (though Photoshop Elements asks about resampling algorithms, so I'm not sure what would preserve the image)...

The easiest way to do that is select "Save For Web" and set the "New Size/Percent" value to 25% Make sure that "Constrain Proportions" is checked.
After it is shrunk down, go to "Quality" and set it for about 70. If you notice, under the picture it will give a file size. This number will increase and decrease as you adjust the "Quality". Try for a size of 75K to 150K
When you are satisfied, click OK and a "Save As" box will come up. Here you can rename the shot, if you want to. (I usually tack an "S" (for Small) onto the origial file name).
PAY ATTENTION to the top line of the Save box, where it says "Save In...". This will tell you where the file can be found for posting. It is not always the same folder that the original file was.
Thanks,
Rad
