I usually shoot a 5D but borrowd my daughter's SX100 to accompany my son on a school trip to the zoo today.

The flash mode was set to "off" and for the life of me I can't figure out how to set it back to "on".:(

I've reviewed the manual, made sure I'm in an allowable shooting mode, manually raised the flash - yet the flash "mode" button does not work.

Am I missing something simple or is there an issue with the camera?

Everything else seems fine and the flash mode (right arrow) button works fine when making adjustments in other menus, but it won't turn the flash on.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks,

John

I've read your post three times, played with my sx100 in all the modes, reviewed the manual and I'm still not 100% certain but as best I can tell you're describing a dead flash.

Raising the flash turns it on, closing it turns it off. When it's on, pressing the right side of the thumb wheel where the flash arrow is gives you a choice between On and Auto in some, but not all, of the modes. Forgive me for sounding basic but we have to speak the same language. If the flash is open and On but doesn't fire when you press the shutter button there's something wrong with the flash.

Thanks for your reply Evan. The flash is raised but does not come on. I called Canon technical support and we determined that the camera will need repaired. It's under warranty but still a hassle and cost to ship it to Canon.

This is the first issue I've had like this from many Canon products.
