Hi all,

Well, the soccer season's just about to start here, and my son just had his first trial match. Last season was my first attempt at shooting soccer, which was only moderately successful partly due to the lens I was using - the 75-300 F4.0-5.6 kit lens wasn't really up to the task (I hasten to add that my lack of skill was at least as much to blame as the lens!)

Anyway, this season I'm back for another try with my new best friend - 70-200 F/4L. Without crappy lenses to blame, it's time to work on my technique! Here's a few of the better ones from the weekend. C&C welcome.

Unfortunately the game was at midday, so I was forced to make heavy use of Lightroom's recovery and fill light functions.

For this one I experimented a little with the composition - let me know if you think it works:

Cropping and spot-on focus need a little attention, but you've caught some good stuff.

You look like MAYBE, a bit like me, you over compensate when shooting at wider angles, ie you zoom too far out for fear of cropping something important out of the picture. If you can, get hold of a fixed-length telephoto and shoot just with that. It's amazing just how much frame-filling action you can achieve and it's amazing when you get the buzz of looking at what you've captured... after the game, of course! ;)

A lot of what I shot was at 200mm (my max) although looking at the ones I posted, only 1 of those is at 200mm. I guess I'm mindfull of the fact that you can crop in PP, but you can't uncrop if you shot it too tight to start with. ;) Almost all of them are cropped from the originals already - I guess I didn't go far enough.

I'll do some re-cropping and see how I go. :)

Ok, I've updated my original post with recropped versions - any comments welcome. Also I thought I'd throw in a few more. :)
