Just about everyday I read this forum and everyones ups, downs & how toos about photography. I feel that overall I've given some good simple advice on subjects I really know something about.

This past weekend it was time to go on the annual family trip to San Diego & Hollywood. In the past I just grabbed my P&S or film camera and have have blast shooting away. Not caring about anything but having fun.

Well this year having a great more knowledge of photography & having a good selection of Canon L glass to travel with I could not decided on what to take. Scared of theft, damages or losing my gear I chose to take my 10D without big ED & Tamron 28-200 glass. I was very unhappy taking photos for the first time on vacation. That glass will never touch my cameras again. Using this lens was like shooting a full manual camera at a boxing match. While riding tour buses & rides I could not focus quick enough to get that shot I wanted. The only time this glass was any good to me was in open sunlight @ f/8 or f/11. Even my kids was saying hurry up to take the photo.
I will not leave my lense behind again.

So, just a note if you have it don't be afraid to use it.
:x

There are times when a small compact camera will do the job. I have 5MP compact with enough features and controls to fulfill most of my desires. It's not Canon, so I won't mention the brand in this forum, but Canon does have it's equivalent, I'm sure...

Yeah, I have a digitatl P&S and left it behind. With all the toys just was not thinking clearly. I was really hoping to make it to the beach & catch some surfers in action.

I'm going through the same thought processes right now. We're getting ready to take another drive cross country. Last time, I took everything I owned, and used almost none of it except for some tourist snapshots at Colonial Williamsburg and West Point. This time, I know better than to drag all the gear along, but still don't want to be anywhere without at least one good camera and a couple decent lens.

I think I've decided I'll take the Mk II with the Sigma 24-60 f/2.8, the 12-24, and the Canon 70-300DO. This will give me reasonable coverage from 12mm-300mm (except for 60-70mm), and the optics are good on all three. It will fit in a Mini-Trekker along with a flash, light meter, and charger. That's about all I'm willing to carry.

I have trouble leaving home for any length of time without taking the whole kit. If I had to do so, I'd be sure and pack at least one "L" lens.

I've never gone on a trip without the whole kit, either. Of course, all my current lenses are relatively light and I have a big bag that they all fit in. That will be changing soon, though. In about a week I'll be ordering the 100-400, 24-70 and a 20D. That's going to make my bag a lot heavier...

I've been going over some reviews, not to sure which lense to get yet but I want to carry one body, lens, & flash in my Tamrac Velocity 7. It worked out pretty good while @ Legoland & Universal Studios. I was able to get on all of the rides with my gear and walk around pretty comfortable all day. The lense I used sucked. The body of choice will be my 10D & the 420 flash, that way if anything bad happens I always have my 20D & 550ex for pro work. This will only be for those crowded type amusement parks, everything else I'm cool with.

Tom - same sentiments but really struggle with some our our airlines 25kg allowance.

Won't it be great when you can use one lense and a set of cmos plug ins ranging from 1x to ??

Yes, I admit that I haven't taken the kit for air travel yet. I suspect that if I did, my requirements would get a lot smaller. Glad I still have that 28-105 lens.

That would be an interesting concept, though those high-magnification chips could be a little noisy. :)
