I took some pictures at the Roller Derby. I didn't bring my flash in, and it was super dark, so everything is shot at ISO 1600, <f5.6. Given that, I'm surprised ANY of them turned out (though they're probably not up to pro standards). I did a lot of work PP (I'd have nothing without RAW). Let me know what you think.

This is a cool thing to photograph, but I think you've got a good idea of the problems here: they are really dark and pretty fuzzy. Tighter shots would have been better as well, really filling the frame with some action. I think you might have been able to pull off some cool panning shots here that would let you hold the shutter open for much longer and over come your disadvantage.

I understand about it being dark...I was at this match and it was the first time I had been to a Roller Derby and the lighting is definitely horrible for shooting. In you 3rd pic with "Rambo" my lil brother is actually in that photo...too funny. I'll try posting some photos when I get home today.

Great to see another derby shooter here. I understand how tough it can be to shoot with the speed and lousy lighting. I think you did good considering your circumstances. www.wftda.org will have info and links for other leagues in your area. If you get a chance to shoot the Eastern region 2008 tournament in the fall, do it. It's non stop derby action for two days with the best leagues from your region.

What a trip... It was a really good match, too. Rambo is my hero. Thanks for the info, bsmotril. I love the derby. My girlfriend's company is a sponsor and they get passes, so I can't wait to go back. But next time, I'm bringing the flash.
