The viewfinder information in my 20D is nowhere near as bright as in my wife's 300D - is this normal? There does not seem to be a way to increase the brightness, only the LCD panel. I have to take my self-darkening prescription glasses off to read the 20D in bright sun but can leave them on with the 300D.

read the manual - the LCD brightness is adjustable.

Oops - sorry......
I notice that the viewfinder seems darker with the 18-55 lens over my 28-135 IS lens. Maybe a different lens may help ?

Here is an isea,, the 20D and 10D have brighter viewfinders than the 300D, as the 300D doesn't have a pentaprism (just some mirrors instead.), so perhaps the information display is the same brightness for both, but seems darker due to the brighter viewfinder???
Just a thought!

I have not tried a 300D but have found that the viewfinder data is "sufficiently" bright on my 20D. Not sure if this helps or not. I prefer using the top lcd anyway since it has so much more information.

Either I am missing the point or most every one else is. Are you talking about the image seen through viewfinder as being too dark? Or are you talking about the LCD display (shutter speed, f-stop, etc) being too dark?
I think there are people answering a question other than the one you are asking.

He is asking about the information display INSIDE the viewfinder.
The info in my viewfinder is bright enough.
Perhaps you have a dud? Maybe have it checked.

OK, time to eat humble pie!
I now realize that the 20D had a lens with a polarizer fitted and the 300D did not. The combination of dark glasses and polarizer made the information at the bottom of the viewfinder unreadable.
Thanks for the resposes and sorry for the mistake

If your dark glasses are polarized as well, then you might have trouble seeing the image as well
Best regards,
Andy
