I want to buy a remote shutter release, and like the concept of wireless. Does the wireless remote work from any direction? Or, must it be in front? Or, in back? What distance is supported?
Thanks for the help.

What model Camera do you have?
The only camera that will work with the RC1 Remote Release is the Digital Rebel, and you have to point it at the front of the camera. I'm not sure of the distance limitations.
The 20D, 10D, and 1 Series Digital Bodies use a wired remote. Canon makes a wireless system for the 1 Series, but it is quite pricey.

Stan,
There are a few different wireless remotes available. Also, not every remote works with every camera body.
Generally, the inexpensive remotes must have a direct line of sight to the front of the camera and work up to about 15-20 feet depending on conditions. The expensive remotes can work from any angle and have a much greater range.
Which camera body do you have?

I have no experience with them, but the price is appealing....

I have a Digital Rebel on order. Not having one in hand, I can only guess how the wireless remote would work, thus my question.
Thanks for the eBay link for the Chinese-made remotes. That might be a good solution, although I'm a little leery (by nature).

The RC-5 remotes are only $22 at B&H. They will work fine out to about 80 degrees L or R from the front center of the Drebel. With a range of about 25 ft.

I use a Pocket Wizard with a Pre trigger release cord CM-N3-P, http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=198049&is=REG. Since it's radio waves, you can stand anywhere as long as you are within range.

Since I use Pocket Wizards for my studio monolights, I also got the wireless connector like Scott has. It works great and from any angle.
I use it with my 10D.
