View Full Version : canon digital for a talented 15yr old artist

I have a daughter who wants a digital camera. its difficult at the best of times to talk sensibly with an adolescent but between grunts she wants to take photographs that are not 'posed'. Added to this she 'thinks' she needs multiple fps.
Given that she is naturally artistic and this foray may develop further, I feel I need to future proof with regard to the camera.
I have Canon 300D so as a result my practical knowledge of compacts is minimal and frankly I find it all confusing.
Has anybody got any recommendations as to the best camera?
Any help would be appreciated, honestly

The closest thing to the 300D in terms of capability would probably be the PowerShot G6. She'll be able to control exposure fully, and it can do "RAW" capture like the 300D for increased flexibility with PhotoShop. It will also accept external flash, so she can experiment with different lighting set-ups. However, I wouldn't be altogether surprised if she's angling for her own Digital Rebel (or 20D). If that's not in the budget, maybe a used D60, also a DSLR, uses the same lenses and software, just a slightly older model.

IMHO, the Canon S-series would be equally good and handy.
I have the S40 and upgraded to the S50 recently. Now it is the S70. There are a host of manual functions that would make my new 300D shameful (bought it becoz I need interchangable lens)
Furthermore, if she is active and the creative type, lugging around a camera bag full of gears may not last with her very much.
Afterall, if she has the S50/70 now and need to move upwards, there is always daddy's 300D to toy with. And you can take this small little camera and take the some good shots as well....

Don't think I want to invest in another SLR.
The camera would need to be a little more than 'point and shoot'
price probably in the range of £200-£400
Thanks to those who have contributed so far

A75 or A70 has everything. Tell her to use it in manual mode.

I'd pick the A95 over the A75 if the G6 is out of the question. She'll be able to use the swivelling viewfinder to compose shots at those otherwise awkward low angles and overheads. Just make sure it's something you'll be comfortable using - I really think she's making a play for your DR. And if she isn't now, once she gets hooked, she will.

Perhaps I should just let her have my 300d and buy a 20D :D
I don't think I'll be allowed somehow but it is worth fantasising!!!!!!

That's definitely the most efficient route to go. Of course, then you'll be squabbling over the lenses.

for that price range, i would get a g6, or a used 300d. the s70 also is cheaper and has all the control, features, and image quality of the g6.

Well, if your 300D starts going missing on a regular basis . . .

Other than the interchangable lens and some of the color settings, I dun think the S70 will lose to the 20D much in terms of creative functions.....
just make sure that you carry extra batteries... My experience with the S50 (Digic) has a battery life span of 2hrs+ of continuous usage...that is under the sun about 30 - 35 degC in Singapore.... maybe in colder climates, it will be shorter....
hey, even the cheap A310 has B & W and Sipia which my 300D doesn't have (or I could find the button for it)
thanks everyone
