I am going out in a few minutes to shoot night shots, and I need to know how to leave the lens open for 30 sec... I don't know which mode and what buttons to hit to do it!

Bulb. Press and hold the shutter button. The LCD panel will display the elapsed time (D60).

I'd leave it in Program mode. That way the flash stays off. The camera will decide the exposure.
Here are a couple of night shots I took with the Dreb

Bulb is only available in manual mode.

I've never seen a "bulb" mode on the rebel, I use Tv and set the time to what I want. If you have to hold the button down you're bound to shake the camera and get a blurred shot.

"Bulb" is not a selectable mode. If you go into Manual mode, use the wheel selection thing (the wheel next to the button you shoot) to go passed ISO, you will hit bulb after the 30" selection.
