Boy did I mess up getting this shot. I did the one below handheld with the 70-200 at 90mm. But I didn't like it, so I decided to spend 10 minutes setting up the tripod, leveling it, perfecting it, getting the angle, and then checking the exposure across 7 frames. Alas, I managed to leave it in Av mode, so the 7 frames went from 1/160 to 1/80 and the exposures didn't match. Argh! I may try to save it, since it's almost twice the size of the one below and is just much better quality.

But this didn't come out too bad, though it took more work to level each frame since it was handheld.

I'm finding that I like playing with panaramics. It's kinda cool. Alas, now I "need" a $500 pano head and a $100 leveling base. It never ends.

Pretty good job. I've taken a number of panoramas and haven't used a pano head yet. You can get good panoramas handheld and on a regular tripod if you are careful. The biggest advantage of a pano head comes into play when you have close foreground objects as well as background objects. For images like yours, you don't have any foreground objects to worry about.

I've done up to 13 images handheld and it still came out pretty good. One thing to do, if you didn't do with the one above, is take them in the vertical position if possible. You have to take more shots across, but you get more area up and down in each shot. This can give you more throw away space if they don't line up very well.

I use Panaroma Factory for mine and it does a great job.

That's a cool shot, Scott. Really pretty, especially with the snow capped mountain in the background.

I'm a sucker for good panoramas and yours certainly fits the bill - well done!! :D

Darn, I really want to see this image but I can't. I get the red x. When I click on the link, it just freezes.

The problem could be on my end but I can see images on other posts with no problem.

Guess, I'll wait and come back to this one.

Now it's working for me.

Great shot! Do you have a favorite stitch program?

Yep. Photoshop.

So far I've done only 2 panos - but one was something like 12 images, and would have printed at 8 inches tall by 10 feet long. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=45945&highlight=pano

Both of these were hand-leveled, corrected, and stitched in Photoshop.

I do *not* recommend stitching a 35,000 x 2,500 image in Photoshop unless you're at least somewhat crazy and have 2+ gigs of RAM. And whatever anyone tells you, it's simply insane to rotate such an image by 0.2 degrees.

Why do I have a hunch You tried that  How many hours did it take to complete?

I have been to that place before and also went up Mt. Washington on the cog railway. You definitely captured the feel of the place. Great job, I love it!

Flatten.
Purge All
Rotate.
The rotate alone took 16 minutes. ROFL.

Thanks Marie.

Yes, it is a hotel, nestled in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. It quite a gorgeous place, though I wouldn't want to be there in the dead of winter!

I'm probably going to go back to this area this weekend, and I'll probably try this shot again. There's more pretty stuff to the right, and a nice little stream. Wish me luck.

Very nice shot, Scottes.
I remember driving past this hotel when I went to Mt. Washington in October but it was quite late in the evening so couldn't stop to take any shots :(

Truly great location. You did a lot better than my attempt in early March. I have the shot in the below link hanging over my fireplace. I purchased it during my stay there in March. Maybe it will give some ideas. The picture in the link took the photographer 10 years to get. The weather conditions are unpredictable up in the White Mountains. Summit views are available only about 170 days a year if that. Good Luck.
