I've got a brand new Sigma 105mm Macro sitting on my kitchen table right now. Just arrived today. I don't leave work for another 2 hours, so until then, I'd like to know if anyone here that has one knows of any weird quirks this lens has, what settings it really shines at, etc.

Oh man I feel like a 10 year old at xmas again...

ask before buy? never!

Well, actually I've been thinking about buying it for the past 3 months. I know the AF is HORRIBLE, but i'm more curious as to what it's really good at. I guess this could even be a general macro question. This is my first macro lens :(

The autofocus stinks. It's slow, loud and grindy. I never used mine for anything other than macro, though, so I used manual focus all the time anyway.

Optically, it's a stellar lens...very sharp, with very nice contrast, beautiful color, and wonderful bokeh. It's a great lens.

Look at the MTF charts at Photozone.de for that lens and you'll know what aperture to use - definitely not f/22!

Manual focus is two step, you gotta flip the switch as well as push the barell.
Focusing is loud and a little slow
Wide open, It is a little low on contrast. Its pretty sharp, but even shaper from 4-11.
as a macro lens, it has a very close focusing distance for 1:1 magnification. DOF becomes razor thin the closer you are focusing.
hope that helps.
