View Full Version : Order of threads in selling forum?

I notice that when I browse through the For Sale boards, the order of the threads is inconsistent. I'm sure there is a reason for it, but I can't figure it out.
For example, some of the threads that are near the top of the page will have the most recent replies 1-2 hours or more. After these, there may be threads with posts as recent as 5 minutes, etc.
What am I missing?

The default sort order is by thread start date. Most recent threads at the top.
It is possible to choose "Last Post" which sorts with the most recent post at the top. This is a per user, per visit sorting and reverts back to the default on your nest visit to the For Sale forum.

Skip, would it be difficult to set the "last post" option to something that's stored in our cookies (or whatever the web-savvy term is) so that when we come back to that particular forum the setting is remembered?

Yes. It's functioning as it is currently configured by design.

No, I don't think so. It is either or and it is a management decision to make the "Most recent thread first" the default sorting.

It would be a cool option none-the-less. If I wanted to view the forum differently, why would that matter to management? They already allow us to change it once visit at a time, so why not let it stick?
Que sera sera

Forgive me for attempted "Thread Jacking" but since the subject here is organization and efficient use of the Buy/Sell Forums (Fora?)
Would it be possible to subdivide the Buy/Sell area into three areas each:
- Cameras
- Lenses
- Other
If I could go only to (say) listings for lenses and THEN change the sort order, I think it would allow for faster indexing of what's up for sale or wanted...
Just tossin' this out there. I have a feeling this has probably been brought up before so be gentle when you shoot me down in flames. Thanks Mods...

You are right it has been brought up before. And one of the problems with a subdivision like that is where an add with both cameras, lenses and accesories should go ?

Ah, touché! Well played sir... well played indeed.
Here's a thought. The MAIN Sell forum could be the place to put anything, as it already is, but the users could have the option to place their FS/FA/FT items in one of the 3(?) sub forums.
The forum could also just add the option to label their thread with a "body", "lens" "accessory" tag, which could be sorted by individual user by clicking on the tag icon.

Add a section for "Collections?"
I understand your point. Thanks... :D

The next release of vBulletin is supposed to allow topic tagging. Essentially OP could then tag his or her thread with [Camera][Lens][Bag][Whatever] and viewers could select the tags they wanted to see.

Yep and if everybody is really good at adding the right tags it will be a breeze to find all ads for a 70-200 f/2.8L IS or all the 20D's for sale etc.
But the new version is still several months away. vBulletin developers have just released release candiate #2. And I know Pekka will wait some time after the gold release before he will upgrade the forum.

That will be a nice feature. Definitely looking forward to those options if POTN upgrades. Thanks for the heads up
