Excuse me for my ignorance but is the G6 640x480 movie mode much clearer than the 320x240 of my G2?
Or is it just larger?

It'll be clearer. You have about the same lens, but the G6 will be capturing about 4x (total) the number of pixels.

648x480 = 307,200 pixels
320x240 =76,800 pixels
As Jon replied, there is a 4x increase in resolution. That will make a huge difference in the amount of detail captured.

Seeing as you can buy a digital camcorder for about a 3rd of the suggested retail price of the G6, if video was my thing i know which i would buy.

Sure, if you want quality movies, there is a lot of MiniDV out there to go with. However, video in digicams are very handy:
1st: You do not need to carry another equipment, if there is a situation where a movie is adequate, just turn the dial.
2nd: Despite almost everybody is aware that digicams can record movies, people do not act like they do in front of camcorders. THey seem to act more normally (no scientific basis for that, just my observation).

Hi,
just a thought ... when I got my G2, I really found to like the video mode.
So I bought a state-of-the-art panasonic miniDV video camera with 800Kpixels, IS, and everything.
Do I use it? No.
Main reason ... if I want to transfer the video to my PC, it's about a night's work (meaning: 8-12 hrs) to download and convert a 1 hr video movie to the PC and save it as MPG.
That sucks big time.
The hardware I use is a 2500 Athlon XP with pinnacle video studio 8 DV (ethernet connection camera to PC).
Maybe if I get a DVD recorder with line in it is usable.
So I'm still using my G2 for that.
Best regards,
Andy

One of the important reasons I bought the G6 was my G3 was weak in the movie clip resolution.
The 640x480 resolution is VGA quality (like television).
Much clearer.
I use 'Zilla Video Converter-Decompiler' to extract frames from the clips in .jpg format and print them in 4x5 size with excellent results.
See 'www.zillasoft.com'
I also use 'QImage' as the printing program which further enhances the image as it processed for printing.
See 'www.ddisoftware.com/qimage'
Am not connected in any way with these sites.
Just wanted to be specific for easy reference.
