Hello all,
I just wanted to share my experience with what must be a common problem with compact digital cameras. Last weekend I took my dog for a walk in the State Park near my house. As usual I brought the camera and had it in the pocket of my vest in a travel case. While chasing the pooch around I fell down on a rocky section. I suffered quite a bruise on my leg, but the real damage was to the camera. When I turned it on I could clearly see that the lcd had cracked. There was still light coming through and the outside screen face looked fine. I went to Best Buy (where I bought the camera) and was told that they would send it out for a repair quote. I also went to 2 local camera shops, both of which had experience sending digital cameras back for broken lcd's. Each one quoted between $175 and $200. The camera cost about $260! Frusturated, I began looking online for a source for the lcd itself, or maybe a parts camera off e-bay. I came upon this site via an internet search where there was a thread on someone replacing the lcd themselves. They posted a phone number of the Canon parts department, where anyone can call up and order the lcd. Simply call 732-521-7230 and tell them what model Canon camera you have and they will immediately give you a price and take your credit card. My lcd cost $44! It was here in about 3 days! The replacement is tricky, but if you are good with your hands and have attention to detail, you should be all set. I just really wanted to re-post this phone number so people can take advantage of this fantastic parts department that is happy to work with end users. I took pictures of the replacement with my other digital camera and when I get the write up done, I will repost for all to see.
Don't fall victim to the camera store prices! Do it yourself and be proud of your accomplishment.
