I've had my D30 for almost a year. I've been advised to take advantage of the warranty and send it back for a cleaning, check up, etc. I wonder if that is part of the warranty and have any of you done this? If so, what was the turn-a-round, and was it worth it? I have no problems now, but know the dust is there.

Also... am I the only one to lose the little caps that cover the flash and shutter cord ports? Is there danger to the camera to leave these open all the time?

Everyone loses those damn little caps. That is why they changed the cover design on the D60. As long as you are carefull about keeping the camera away from dirt/liquids it should be ok. You can also cover them with a little gaffers tape if you want. Just don't use duct tape, masking tape, etc. because it will dry out and be impossible to get off. Gaffers tape doesn't dry out or leave a residue but it is expensive.

Cleaning is not part of the warrenty. Only a few locations service the D30/D60/1D. One factory service center is in California, the other in New Jersey. Service takes forever. I am waiting two weeks so far on a D60 repair. If I get it back in a month I will consider myself lucky. Canon technical support is terrible. They have adopted the approach of the computer industry. Let the consumer find the problems, don't give access to a live person, and hire a bunch of people who don't know anything except the script the company hands them for service calls.

If you decide to try and clean the sensor yourself, follow the advice on the Canon web site religiously.
