Help!

I'm hoping someone out there can provide some step-by-step instructions to do the following (and I wish I were at home where I could post a pic sample)-

I have, as my background image/layer a panoramic image. "On top" of that image, I have a smaller image set as its own layer... What I would like to do is with respect to the "top" image, I would like to slowly fade out say the left third of that image, so that the left side linearly begins to blend in with the background image (kinda like creating a "soft edge" effect). I'm not one for using the linear gradient tool, and when I've tried to use it, the background image goes simply black and the faded portion of the top image is black as opposed to transparent.... In my own ignorance, I'm guessing maybe I have to use a layer mask perhaps and apply the gradient to that??? I don't know... Again, I wish I were at home and could post an example of what I'm looking to do but I hope your Photoshop pros know what I'm saying...

Again, step-by-step instructions would be GREATLY appreciated!! :-)

BTW- I'm using CS (wishing I had CS3)..

Thanks in advance!

Yep a layer mask is what will work in this case:

1Apply a layer which selects all of the image on top: Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All

2. Reset the foreground/backgound colors to Black/White using the small B/W icon in the toolbar (left and below Set Forground Color tile)

3. Choose the Gradient Tool and select the linear gradient in the options bar.

4. Play with various stroke lengths and opacities until you're happy with it.
