I am getting ready to order a 20D, probably from B&H but wanted to find out if anyone buying the 20D has any regrets. I am going to use my 10D and Elan 7E as backups to the 20D. With my lenses I dont see any reason to get the kit lens, do you.

the 20D was my first slr... so my only regret has been that now there are so many lens options out there that I will never be satisfied. :)

Other than that the 20D is a superlative camera.

I went from a 300D to the 20D, and absolutely no regrets.
It's flawless!
IMHO, you definately dont need the kit lens.

None at all. And the kit lens is definitely not necessary.

......Okay........thats a joke.

The 20D is fast and stealthy............I miss it :-(

First post  , this is my first DSLR also (jumped from a G5. Wow! World of difference). I just received my shipment from B&H last Friday. They were wonderful! Initially it was set for 3 days, but the package arrived in 2 days! To say I was pleasantly surprised would be a complete understatement. So far I love everything about it.

I got it with the 18-55mm kit lens along with the 50mm f1.8 II lens to start out with. Ordered a grip, and so far the grip has been very solid, another pleasant surprise. :)

The firmware version was 1.05 so I was set and ready to go. I don't think you'll be disappointed with your order at all. 8)

Not that it's really needed, obviously, but just figured I'd chime in for another full recommendation of the 20D. This was my first DSLR, and I'm coming from a G3 and S400. When I first picked it up out of the box and turned it on and started firing off shots, I can't even remember what my first thought was... I was just blown away by the solid feel of it, fast shutter speed, and everything in general.

I'm extremely happy with this camera.. my only issue with it is trying to find the right lenses for me and not going broke... I'm still debating on whether or not to get a grip... I wonder if it'd be too big and if I'd really need it. It's never died on me while out and about. In fact, on Halloween, a few friends and I went shooting. My friend killed the battery on my S400 and half of the G3 and my 20D was still going strong.

I second this. I get very poor quality pics with the 18-55. There is another kit out there that's supposed to be better, but if I had mine to do over I would get the body and order the lenses seperately.

I added the 20D to my Drebel, and I am very pleased. I like having two bodies, and now I am trying to resist the urge to sell the Drebel to get another 20D.

The 20D is my latest acquisition, and I got it with the EF-S 17-85 IS 'kit' lens. I was hoping that it could effectively replace my 24-70 L as a walkaround lens, but I can't make that a 100% switchover yet. I am discovering some of the weaknesses of the 17-85, but it does have a lot more to offer than the EF-S 18-55, and I am planning on keeping it. The 18-55 has not been mounted on either camera for over a year, and the only reason I still have it is to have something to put on the Drebel whenever I do sell it.

Hope this helps.

Have Fun,

Just got the 20D few hours ago, so didn't have time to try it out. But while at the shop and 1st held it... (don't flame me)... I felt it was more toy(ish) than the rebel. However, while at home reading the manual, I started to notice the difference in build quality. But it's not as a big difference as some people lead you to believe.

Another observation is the fps, boy! that's a mean machine.

Just first impressions.

Well if you guys don't like the lenses, then what do you recomend for the 20D.
This is in terms of a wide angle lense.

Hallo CoolToolGuy,
Could you share some of 17-85 weakness you had found here? I am planning to buy one, so your input would be apprecited.

Thanks

I have the 20D. I think the kit lens is OK for the price and provides a useful walk around lens. But if you have ones that overlap that range, then you don't need it.

Thanks

I tried one and though the results were soft compared to the 28-135 which I ended up getting. In hindsight, I should have tried another 17-85 lens since it is a better walk aorund lens than the 28-135 (which doesn't go wide enough).

Having held a Rebel before, I cannot understand how in the world you would think that a 20D feels like a toy. The Rebel is made of plastic and to me just feels really cheap. Nothing like the solid metal feel of the 20D.
But I guess everybody is entitled to their opinion, I just can't understand it.

I just got my 20D last Thursday and bypassed the kit lens. See my sig for what I got. I plan on getting a filler lens in the future but since I have started with L lenses, It will be difficult not to save for another L :-?
The 20D is my first DSLR and so far it is awesome.
Now, if I only had time to go out and shoot.....

Hallo CoolToolGuy,
Could you share what are some of 17-85 weakness here? I am planning to buy one, so your input would be apprecited.

ThanksI am not a pixel peeper, so I can't really tell you about CA and the like. There has been some discussion about distortion at 17mm. I can't deny or confirm that at this point.

I noticed that it is more subject to flare than my 24-70 L, so I replaced the plain filter I had on it with a Hoya Pro1 multi-coated filter.
Prior to having the Hoya filter I had a B+W F-PRO UV filter, which is thin, but not 'slim'. When I added a C-POL filter, I got vignetting in the corners. That was the reason I got the Hoya Pro1 - it is the thinnest filter that still has a front thread. I haven't tested with the Pro1 and a C-POL. If I still get vignetting I may try a Pro1 C-POL.
I have the hood, and the most important reason to get it is to keep your fingers out of the frame! Without it, you can sometimes get your finger in the shot just by resting it on the filter thread. And, thanks to the viewfinder crop (95%), you can't always see it. With the hood, I'll be sure to keep my fingers behind it.
Hope this helps.

Have Fun,

I feel exactly the same. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, I too can't understand how the all metal, black, solid 20D feels like a toy compared to the plastic 300D. While the 300D was very nice, the 20D feels like a real camera in comparison.
But everybody is different.

I have now sold my 1D MkII and use the 20d's. They have a few slighty less than "pro" features but not many... Great camera and NO regrets.

Hi, I received my 20D 3 weeks ago, took about 100 pics and it locked up. I had to send it into Canon Service center because they could not fix it for me on the phone. I am sure that I will still love the 20D when it comes back.
I purchased the 20D with 17-85 lens from Camera world in Oregon instead of B&H because I did not have to pay Tax or shipping. This saved me about $160 US dollars. I have had a D60 for 2 years but I think the 20D is much better.
Good luck

The only thing better then a 20 D is a second one ( and for those an MKII)

All I can say is I am unhappy with this weather because I can't use my toys. All my feathered friends hide.

In 30 years I have never owned a camera that ( and I have owned a Hasselblad) has taken over my heart like this one has. I love everything about it and its only shortcoming is me. There is no lag, it operates in an instent. I love shooting Raw, it give us total control.

Run do not walk to buy it. you will love it.

Wide? I'm using a 12-24mm Sigma...
also the 28-135IS and a 100-400L/IS...
I'm pretty happy using these with the 20D or 300D... I know I'll replace the 28-135IS at some point but it's a good "normal" walkaround lens...

I upgraded from the 10D to the 20D as soon as it became available. Here are some observations: higher resolution is obvious when pixel peeping but not huge on prints, focus is generally much better and more reliable than 10D, feel is very similar with a slight edge to the 20D for quality, noise seems better everywhere EXCEPT that long exposures and underexposed (then corrected) RAW/Jpeg files seem to have significantly more banding noise than the 10D. If you get one be sure and get C1 software, HUGE improvment in look and details IMHO, and for sports/action shooting the 20D walks away...

Overall it is a great camera and probably the best at its price. It will reward great glass more than the 10D did. I would reccomend it overall but the 10D was no slouch.

Cheers,

Darrin

Update for my previous post... I picked up my 20D yesterday, I got the 18-55mm lens and the accessory pack that our Canadian stores are selling with the camera. With the accessory pack I received the battery grip, extra battery, camera case and along with this I bought a 1 gig card - it's one of those fast cards???

If I didn't have to sleep last night I would have been shooting with it.

Merry Christmas!
