I'd say you did the right thing. I've never seen or heard of anything that bad out of the box. I looks like someone emptied their vacuum cleaner bag in the camera.

Maybe they did quality checks inside a saw mill.

before i retuned the camera I tried a rocket blower and the stuff would not budge!!

At that point I decied to return the camera so I tried some compressed air, just for the hell of it, and that didnt work either. OH well I have a new 20d and no dust so i am happy.

that is gruesome!!!
It couldn't get that dirty unless someone dropped the camera or just the sensor on a dirty floor.
Good thing you returned it

Yes, I made a mistake, I took many test photos at the smallest apature and I guessed the wrong lens, sorry. It is besides the point anyway.

Sorry but that does not look like dust on the sensor, its just too in focus and well defined, its also in different places on both piccies ?

I think it's easier to clean your sensor than to go back to the shop and get the camera exchanged - and the new one most likely also has some dust!

Look here for instructions about cleaning your sensor: http://www.pbase.com/copperhill/ccd_cleaning

Also have a look at the rear element of your lenses. Maybe the dirt is on your lens, not your sensor.

If you switch rapidly between the two photos, most of the dust seems to be in similar places. Some bits move around though.

It looks entirely consistent with sensor dust to me... although I've never seen quite THAT much of it on any of my sensors (thankfully).

Sensor dust does move around occasionaly. I guess the shutter mechanism creates a small amount of air movement which causes it to move.

Why is there a presumption that tpinchback has faked this? What would be his motivation?

If this was aimed in my direction, actually that was not what I was suggesting  I wondered more if it was something in the lens. The odd speck of dust I have picked up has shown itself as a pale grey out of focus speck rather than the sharp angular dust these ones show.

My first impression was that it wasn't all sensor dust either. Some of it had a very soft focus like sensor dust would, and some of it was very sharp. That would give the impression that it's not all on the same plane as would be the case with sensor dust.

Once again I tried cleaning this before I returned the camera and this stuff seemed like it was glued to the sensor.

Before I returned the 20D I shined a bright light onto the senor and I could see the chunks that were defintly on the sensor. Now that I think about it I dont think it was dust, but something else got onto the senor at the factory, because dust usually blows right off with a rocket blower.

Hi!

I recently purchased a Canon 20D also and found some dirty spots on my pictures. At first I thought it was dust on the lenses but after having cleaned them thoroughly, the spots still appear on my photos. See here:

After reading your post I suspect that there is dust on the sensor straight out of the box. Can anyone take a look at my images and confirm if it is a dust-on-the-sensor problem?

Thanks all,
Airchild

It has that classic "dust bunny" look, yes. Welcome to the wonderful world of dSLR sensor cleaning. ;) It aint as hard or as scary as it looks.

You have an OLD 20d?

I haven't even checked any of mine yet. I generally have them with just one lens on and so don't worry too much about it. I look at the open sky shots now and then to see if there is a sign of it. If so, open and clean. If not. nothing. :)

SERRIOUSLY this whole sensor-dust shouldn't be this bad.

We SHOULDN'T BE FORCED TO BELIEVE THAT THIS HAS TO BE THE ONLY WAY!!!!! Serriously i think this is ridiciulious that canon and nik*n have not implemented cleaning mechanisms yet!!!!

...it's just dust guys...blow it off or swipe it... not that big of a deal. My 10D was bad straight out of the box too (not this bad) but bad enough to require cleaning right away.
