Hi all, I like DPP for RAW processing but I need to start keeping better track of my images now I'm taking so many - like tagging them for instance & keeping track of which I have worked on & which still need developing.

Would you recommend I continue with DPP & use Organiser in PSE6, or perhaps get Lightroom, or even a different solution entirely?

If Lightroom is your recommendation would you wait until version 2 appears for sale, or might the upgrade cost be low enough to not worry about?

I'm new to this and would appreciate your thoughts,

Thanks

Phil

I use iView (iview-multimedia.com/). Now bought by Microsoft.
They updated some icons, removed some functionality I believe, and raised the price on it. It's called Expression Media nowadays.

LR supposedly works okay, but I don't use it for organising, since it slows down my computer too much, and I like the way iView works (for instance catalog sets).

Have a look here (thedambook.com/) and read chapter 1.

One thing LR is missing, which PSE Organizer has is the checkmarks next to keywords.

This may seem like a little thing for some... but if you've gotten used to doing fun, quick and easy AND searches on your keywords in Elements, you'll be frustrated with it in LR. I'm trying to strongly argue for this feature in the Adobe forums, and feature request forms.

LR's speed has never been an issue for me, but I've heard many echo Rene's comment on speed... so make sure to download trial version first to play around with. Nobody is really sure what the cost will be for version 2. Apple lowered their price on aperture version 2, so will Adobe follow suit? It's a big unknown.

One final note is that DPP typically gives better colors by default than LR/ACR does (for RAW files). Some improvement can be made by setting default calibration values, but this can be difficult to do, and best method seems to require a color-checker and CS2 or CS3 to run a script. Again, this is one of those things that some have noticed, while others swear the default values work fine for them... your mileage may vary.

Iview and i mean 3.1.3 it's really the best ,infinite possibility to customize and taging and you can send photos to dpp it's has many script to enlarge the ability , i guess it's the best , the new version microsoft is a crap
i suggest to try the iview 3.1.3 version , and when the microsoft will be perfect you could use it

acdsee pro 2 is amazing fast and it's a great program
lightroom 1.3.1 is a great software , but it's very slow with many photos
Portfolio 8.5 is great software
i read a lot of good about IDimager but it has a ugly gui

i would try iview

Phil great gear!!!! :razz::razz:

Thanks for the suggestions everyone .

Do you recommend I avoid the Microsoft updated version of iView then?

Try them all three (iView, EM and EM2)
I have iView, and it does all I need. However, I haven't encountered problems with EM when I tried it. (IIRC, some people have, according to the iView forums; some functionality seems to be missing, no idea what exactly).

If you can live with the fact that iView isn't updated any longer, and have no other reasons to prefer EM or EM2, you could go with iView. ISTR that microsoft raised the price on EM quite a bit for just a makeover of a few icons...

I use DPP, Paint Shop Pro, and IDImager. IDImager is a really nice DAM tool. It has lots of capabilities, including scripting (if you're into that) and great support by the developer. The Pro version is $69 and the personal version is $49 if you don't need all the stuff in the Pro. Give it a shot--there's a 30-day free trial. There is also a free version, but it is the last version and doesn't have some of the nice stuff that version 4 has.
