I was a little disappointed with the result - how could I have capture the colour/texture of the fur better?

Damian,

Honestly, if you hadn't said something, I would have assumed that it was a nice close-up shot of a light-toned ape with very rough and wiry fur. :) Nothing to be disappointed with.

Regarding texture, is this the original or a post-processed image? It looks to me like maybe you hit it with too much "unsharp mask." Or maybe he just needs some hair conditioner?

As to color, you can play with hue and saturation levels a bit until you get something that looks like what you saw. Some levels adjustment might also help.

Best of luck,

I think it probably did need conditioner!!

But to the naked eye the baboon was almost a combination of gold and tan - but that colour seems weak here.

But - it's amazing what you can get an ape to do for a banana.

Looks like mid-day or near mid-day sun. A photographer's worst enemy. The light is harsh. Try it again at sunrise or sunset, whichever is best for this "statue" and I think you'll be much more pleased with the results. Otherwise the shot is fine.
