If you are experiencing the file writing problem and jumping/missing thumbnail defect go to Canon web site and/or use the 800 number included with any documentation you have from Canon !

Our resolve may have to come through a class action suit!

Mike, do you have any idea of how many cameras this involves? I see a lot of posts about this specific problem here, and on dpreview.com, but they are all from you. Do know for sure if this problem is widespread an going unnoticed, or if it is just your camera? It would seem to me that if there is a real noticable bug in the camera's operating system, it would affect more than just a few users and there would be a lot more mention of it on the boards.

How many D60's have you been through so far without getting one that works correctly?

Could it possibly be a problem with every D60, but one that takes a very specific combination of settings to make the bug manifest itself? A "magic combination" that most people are just not coming across?

Between DPreview and Rob Galbraith's site there are many who have experienced it, more seem to be coming forward each day.

I was told by Canon a few weeks ago that it affects most cameras but since the majority don't use raw they never notice it!

Problem has been that Canon refuses to acknowledge the whole issue and some from Canon have implied I was the only one with it. I offered my camera to their tech dept to see what was going on but they refused my offer!

When they were going to replace mine with a working model, they tested that camera and found the problem in this new one. It was sent to Japan, and they have seen the problem first hand and should have a fix soon!

Hi Adam,

I'm with Mike on this one.

I've had my D60 for a couple of months, initially shooting in jpeg exclusivly. No Problem! After taking the advice posted on this and other forums I changed over to shooting in raw. This is when I started having problems exactly as Mike explains.

My current solution is to use raw/single shot as opposed to raw/continuous shot. I havn't had a problem shooting in single shot mode but this is not a long term solution.

I read a thread that speculated that the problem may have been confined to a batch that hit the US. I purchased mine through a reputable dealer here in Melbourne Australia and I know of at least one person in Hong Kong with the problem, so that theory dosn't hold true.

Since Canon have now finally acknowleged the problem the ball is in their court. We have to wait and see what they come up with. Hopfully the fix will come as a firmware upgrade and not require a Camera recall!

OK, that makes complete sense. I don't know what percent of D60 users are shooting RAW and continuous, but maybe not as many as I would have thought. I shoot RAW, but I have yet to try continuous mode (only had the D60 2 weeks now). I don't know if I will do it much either, this is a mode I rarely used on my Elan since I don't generally photograph anything that moves.

I would be interested in the exact details of this problem though. Does it affect the final images in any way, or is it confined to the thumbnails? If it's just an annoyance from having the wrong or missing thumbnail, I'll probably be able to live with it if I come across it. Since Canon's on it too, you can certainly expect them to fix the firmware.

Hi Adam,

It will not happen all the time but when it does happen the camera will not write the raw file to the CF card untill you either press the shutter release half way down or hit the preview button. This is more of a inconvenience because even though the thubnail is missing, the raw file is still OK, but you will loose shots if you turn your camera off before pressing one of the two buttons.

Others have explained it better than I so I suggest you do a search on this and other forums for a complete and detailed description.

Hi Mike

I see you are still "around" witrh our infamous Bug.... Good, I was afraid you got mad or hurt over the other forum thing. As you are aware, mine does it too, so I am with you here. I didnt remember if you are a fulltime professional who relies solely on this D60 now (as I am) but I can tell you I am not waiting on Canon. I too, called NJ factory and talked to John who said Canon is hard at work on the new firmware that is "supposed" to fix this issue... but until then, I am switching to high JPG for everything. I have other D60 owners saying they are getting 24x30s out of the JPG so I will go with that.

I have to be patient as we all are in the same boat.

I cant get over these manufactures racing to release another model (bigger and better - NOT) just to have all of these bugs in previous models. Do you think I am going to buy the new 11 MP model... you gotta be kidding !! No I will not be giving away any more money.

Hi Paul,

I'm still around, D60 problem seems to be getting bigger with many more posts at Rob's place about this occurring.

I think this could have been handled better by Rob, I was never given a chance, I was just banned, oh well wasn't the first time in my life and it's not the last. This might have been ocurring while Rob tested the 1Ds, which he has a grievance with too.(read his review) Canon or the tech guys probably threatend to not give the camera for review since I was on the forum !

Canon has been formally contacted by me for a new/refurbished working camera, this will move to a more indepth issue very soon.

Since there may be cameras which may not have the issue I want one which works!

Canon USA is afraid of Canon Japan and will not make a move at all toward any repair.

As you can see by the poor images samples of the new 1Ds, (both photography and technical quality, I.E. huge amount of dust and poor toning of images. Canon has a major problem with quality control.

As a pro photographer we must be able to trust our equipment, when that is lost we have to find equipment which we can. My D30 works great, although the first one I had was exchanged with the dealer last year.

Chuck Westfall totally ignored the issue of the file write bug as I explained and he made it clear that I was the only one reporting it and Canon could not duplicate the problem. I first reported the problem on 5/7/02!

But he declined to view my camera, and one of someone else!

However, the situation became worse when the very camera Canon was going to exchange mine for, experienced the same problem I had, and I did not even touch that one. But it does seem Canon NY techs did, and sent it to Japan. Unfortunatley they could have had one two months earlier if they looked at mine when offered!

Years ago I was involved a freelancer with a company that turned to "work for Hire" contracts. When I tried to form a team effort for the photographers to not sign such, warning them that they would be out of work in a few years if they did. They all turned on me
including the staff photog at the company.

Today they are all begging for work, and i'm still collecting my money from images made back then, becasue I did not signed the agreement!

I will be doing a demo of the D60 defect at the NY photo show next month, along with Canon's demo of the 1Ds !!!

All disagreements are not bad !

Take care,

Mike
