View Full Version : Brick & Steel Border Counties Rally

I made my way up to the Scottish Borders for the annual running of the Brick & Steel Border Counties Rally. The event had attracted a huge and varied entry, but they don't call it 'killer kielder' for nothing, and by the time the cars got to stage 4 where I was, around 40% of the field had already crashed out or retired, which was a shame. add into that, the worst car park I've ever had to park in (mud I can deal with, but numerous deep potholes and rocks that meant my car kept grounding out even crawling along in 1st gear) and a 2 hour delay on the running of the final stage, meant a very long day indeed.
Anyway, on to some pictures....
#1 Merry Christmas.....hang on, British summertime started last week!

#2 Mark Higgins was giving his MG S2000 a shakedown prior to the Pirelli Rally later this month. As you can see, we did have some lovely sunshine as well.

#3 A mk II Escort doing what they do best - going sideways!

#4 Here comes the snow again...

#6 Where I wanted to be for the second running of the stage, but a 2 hour delay meant that I had to head for home. A real shame.

#7 Showing a bit of battle damage

#8 I'll finish with something a little different - the beautiful border scenery with a dusting of snow.

I hope you enjoy the photographs. All were taken with a 1D mk II, and either a Sigma 120-300, an 85 f1.8 or a 17-40 f4 L. There's a full gallery on my website (link in my signature below) for those that are interested. As usual, any comments or feedback is most welcome.
Right, I'm off to powerhose the underside of my car to get rid of the mud from yesterday's car park and make sure the undertray is still attached before the snow comes again!
Cheers,
Simon.

Quite a day you had Simon !
Some great images.
Love the Higgins shot ,and great to see Steve Bannister still giving it large with the Mk2.
Wonder if that his original car called "Ethel",or a reshelled version ?

Nice shots Simon, we stuck it out with the delay for SS7 and it was worth it in the end, a long day though.

Lovely shots Simon. Miggin's MG looks rather nice in the Stobart colours and #8 is superb.
Having heard about the weather and read your comments about the access roads i'm glad i didn't go up for this. I've had enough car-related headaches this week :)

Cheers Geoff :D. The access road was truely awful, and well over a mile long to get to where we had to park. I forgot to say that while I didn't arrive particularly early (about 9am for a stage starting at 1115am) I still had to park on the road with around a dozen other cars until someone arrived with a key to open the gate. Even the guy from the Scouts who was helping take peoples money didn't have a key .
The MG S2000 looks good, sounds great and went well too!

Was stuck in the service park all day for this event as I was part of the service crew for my friend in a silver nova with red bumpers (car 145) do you have any pics of him?

Great shots Simon. I love that last shot. I take it you took it on the way back to the car. I'm still defrosting now

A stunning set Simon, the hassle worth it when you end up with results like these.

Nice shots Simon. The final shot is my favourite it shows the location and car off perfectly. I think you set off at just the right time to capture that shot before the rest of us gate crashed the scene!:lol: Cheers also for the techy tips, much appreciated. ;)

Very nice Simon, out of all of them I think the last one stands out for me, I spent the day at the top of Ogre Hill which meant I had an interesting drive out of the stage in the snow

Yes, the last shot was taken on the way back to the car - I had to try and salvage something from freezing me nuts off for 2 or 3 hours waiting for the cars to come back!!

Thanks John! I'm happy with the shots I got. It was just a shame it was such a long day to really only see the cars once. Never mind - there's always next year!

Crackin Set Simon, No.8's my favourite the way the road/ditch take you into Girvans Scoob & then the winding road on top of the roof takes your eye into the distance.
Nicely composed & executed.

Where did you dig this thread up from?
No need for the sarcasm either  - the thread is nearly 18 months old and I don't have an unlimited amount of web space to host everything I post.
