Ok. I know you all don't particularly like heavily manipulated images, but I'm setting up a portfolio of images for an art director to take a look at.... I'm not aiming for picking up traditional commercial work. I want a more edgey portfolio thats got artwork instead. So, a couple of images to take a look at for you. Same two pics manipulated in PS.
Comments welcome, per usual.

I like the first one as it truly implies something different. I'd like to see more detail in the horse, as in #2, and more detail in the ski as it's rather blank. The lower right bright spot is out of place.
If I could I suggest... Raise the buildings up, and don't break continuity to the building on the left. It might help give a little more strength to the idea of water being there.
I like it, but it doesn't really catch any emotion from me.

It is a great composition. A little dark - but if that were not your intent, I know that you would have fixed already.
The one thing that kind of annoyes me is the water level. I like the level on the building, but I do not like it on the horse. I don't really believe that the horse waded out in the water chest deep of his own volition. I hear you now, saying "But it is a flood - the horse did not wade out, that is the rising water!" OK, well if that is the case, then why is the horse not completely submerged? The water is clearly several tens of feet deep, based on it's level against the building, so shouldn't poor horsey be drowned?
What I would like to see, is the horse from the second shot in the place of the one in the first shot. Then we would have a veiw looking over the shoulder of a horse who is standing at or near the unseen (below the frame) waters edge. It just doesn't make sense as is.
I do like it though.

maybe the horse is standing on top of a submerged building? :P I like the pic too, but I agree the horse should be lightened up some.
