Thought my first post would be basketball but here's a triple jump.
This was my first track and field event.

Nice action with a filled frame and a nice facial expression. The colors look a tad over saturated and the image is a tad soft but the long jump is so difficult to get a tack sharp image as the jumper is coming right at you. Nicely done and welcome.

Shutter speed was 1/500, would a faster shutter help?

The long jump is tough to shoot when they are coming at you. This does look a tad soft and 1/500 is way to slow on the shutter. At minimum get to 1/1000. It would also help when posting pictures not to strip the exif data or add it to the post.

Thanks for the advice. Will crank up the shutter speed next meet.
